... Read moreHaving read Forgotten Echoes, I can say it’s a refreshingly unique midlife cozy mystery that artfully combines antiques, ghostly encounters, and subtle magic. The protagonist Alice’s move from Oregon to St. Augustine brings a vivid new setting steeped in history and atmosphere, perfect for the antique store backdrop, where mysteriously restocking inventory adds a touch of enchantment. One intriguing aspect that really pulled me in was the blend of supernatural elements with everyday life. The personification of Death as David, the boss of all Grim Reapers, is both original and engaging, imparting a quirky personality to a character often depicted as ominous or distant. This creative choice adds humor and depth while maintaining suspense. The mysterious items Alice encounters evoke curiosity and tension, especially when a stranger demands objects with potentially catastrophic implications for humanity. This intertwining of everyday curiosities, like antiques, with high-stakes supernatural conflict makes the story stand out from typical cozy mysteries. Additionally, the subtle hints toward religious aspects and the symbolic imagery, such as the pocket watch with the inscription "FORGOTTEN ECHOES" and the design of two misshapen triangles facing away from each other, give the narrative layers of meaning that invite readers to piece together the underlying mysteries. For anyone who enjoys mysteries that go beyond the usual detective story and weave in magical realism and spiritual elements, Forgotten Echoes offers a compelling read. It’s perfect for midlife readers looking for relatable protagonists navigating new challenges blended with supernatural intrigue. The presence of a cop/detective and ghost communications adds structure to the unfolding mystery and keeps the pace engaging. Overall, if you are attracted to cozy mysteries with a magical twist—where antiques aren’t just collectibles but possible keys to otherworldly secrets—this book is definitely worth exploring.
