... Read moreYou guys, I totally get it. English is a wild ride, and honestly, sometimes it feels like a cosmic joke. We've all had those moments where we just stare at a word and think, 'Who made these rules?!' Beyond the silent 'P's and the headache of spelling 'Wednesday,' there's so much more that makes English incredibly confusing. Take homophones, for instance. I can't be the only one who still sometimes pauses when writing 'their,' 'there,' or 'they're.' Or 'to,' 'too,' and 'two'! It's like the language decided, 'Let's give three perfectly good words the exact same sound but totally different meanings and spellings, just to mess with everyone.' And don't even get me started on 'read' (present tense) and 'read' (past tense). They look identical but sound different, and you only know which one it is from context. It's truly baffling! Then there are the irregular verbs. Why do we say 'I go to the store,' but 'I went to the store yesterday'? Why isn't it 'I goed'? And 'sing, sang, sung' versus 'bring, brought, brought.' There's no consistent pattern, and it feels like you just have to memorize them all. It's exhausting for native speakers, let alone someone trying to learn English! And plurals! We have 'cat' to 'cats,' 'dog' to 'dogs,' which is fine. But then we have 'mouse' to 'mice,' 'foot' to 'feet,' and 'child' to 'children.' What happened to consistency? It's like the language enjoys throwing curveballs just when you think you've figured out a rule. My brain just can't handle the randomness sometimes. Another thing that always gets me is the pronunciation of words with 'ough.' Think about it: 'though,' 'through,' 'tough,' 'bough,' 'cough.' Each one has a completely different sound for that 'ough' combination. How are you supposed to know how to pronounce it if you haven't heard the word before? It's a total guessing game, and it makes reading aloud a minefield. Honestly, if I could sit down with the creators of the English language, I'd have a long list of questions. But for now, I'll just keep commiserating with all of you who also find English ridiculously confusing. It's a beautiful language in its own way, but it definitely keeps us on our toes!
