Toxic vs Genuine

2024/4/14 Edited to

... Read moreI remember a time when I thought being positive meant always looking on the bright side, no matter what. If a friend was going through a tough time, my go-to response might have been something like, 'Being negative won't help' or 'Just stay positive.' I genuinely thought I was helping, but I’ve since learned that this approach often falls into the trap of 'toxic positivity.' It’s that subtle, sometimes well-intentioned, pressure to maintain a happy facade, even when facing difficult situations. The truth is, while optimism is incredibly valuable, toxic positivity can actually be incredibly isolating and harmful. When someone says, 'Good Vibes Only' during a crisis, it can make others feel like their genuine pain or frustration isn't welcome. I've personally experienced how invalidating it feels when you're told, 'You'll get over it' or 'Others have it worse' when you're already struggling. It makes you feel like your emotions are wrong, or that you're ungrateful, which can hinder the healing process. Genuine optimism, on the other hand, isn't about ignoring hardship; it's about acknowledging it while maintaining hope and resilience. It’s about creating a safe space for all emotions. Instead of shutting down feelings with phrases like 'Crying won't help. Toughen up,' true support offers comfort: 'It's ok to cry. Can I give you a tissue & hug?' This validates their experience and shows you're truly there for them, not just for their happy moments. Cultivating genuine support in my own life has been a game-changer. I’ve learned to pause and truly listen when someone shares their struggles. Instead of jumping to solutions or platitudes, I ask myself, 'What does this person need right now?' Often, it’s simply validation: 'That must've been hard for you. You're resilient & better days are coming,' or an offer for practical help: 'It's important to let it out. Is there anything I can do to make this easier for you?' It’s about being present and allowing space for their emotional states, rather than trying to force a 'Just stay positive' attitude. If you find yourself on the receiving end of toxic positivity, remember that your feelings are valid. You don't owe anyone a happy performance. It’s okay to gently redirect the conversation or even set boundaries. For instance, if someone tells you 'Good Vibes Only,' you might respond with, 'I appreciate your positive energy, but right now I really need to process what I'm feeling.' Ultimately, the goal is to foster connections built on empathy and understanding, recognizing that life has its ups and downs. By choosing genuine responses over toxic positivity, we can create more authentic and supportive relationships, helping ourselves and others navigate life's challenges with true resilience and hope. It’s a journey of learning, but one that leads to deeper, more meaningful interactions.

Ultimately it’s about establishing boundaries with people. A lot of people love the attention that comes with victimhood and don’t want to do the work to heal. There are only so many times I’m going to allow someone to rehash the same topic with me before I tell them they need to find a qualified professional.
