im bringing these books to the beach ☀️
This whole next week I’ll be on vacation in South Carolina and plan to spend the entire time on the beach reading. I spent a lot of time debating which books I’d want to bring and settled on these three (the last one is a strong maybe but I’m not sure if I’ll get to it). I love a good literary fiction and literary thriller, lmk which books you’re bringing on your beach vacation! (Real or hypothetical lol)

Picking out books for a beach vacation is truly one of my favorite parts of planning the trip! There’s something so satisfying about finding that perfect read that matches the vibe of sun, sand, and crashing waves. I know so many of us are drawn to books with those iconic beach sunset covers, perhaps something reminiscent of 'Malibu Rising' or other stories that promise a compelling escape by the ocean. It’s not just about the story inside, sometimes the cover art just screams 'vacation goals,' right? Speaking of captivating authors, my pick 'Bear' by Julia Phillips has been on my list for ages. Her writing often creates such an atmospheric experience, much like her highly acclaimed novel 'Disappearing Earth'. If you loved the intricate storytelling and deep character dives in 'Disappearing Earth,' you’ll appreciate the unique, almost haunting quality of 'Bear' as it unfolds in a Pacific Northwest setting, exploring the lives of two sisters yearning for escape. It’s literary fiction at its finest, proving that beach reads don’t always have to be light – sometimes a gripping, thought-provoking narrative is exactly what you need to lose yourself in. For those who, like me, enjoy a good literary thriller to keep the pages turning, 'Razorblade Tears' by S.A. Cosby is an absolute powerhouse. This crime drama, with its intense plot and unflinching look at complex characters, offers a different kind of escapism. Imagine getting completely engrossed in solving a mystery while the ocean breeze keeps you cool – pure bliss! And if you’re looking for something truly unique, the gothic mystery and sapphic romance of 'Spitting Gold' by Carmella Lowkis promises a spellbinding journey. With its intriguing blend of sisters conning an aristocratic family and a ghostly haunting, it’s definitely not your typical beach read, but perfect for those who love something a bit darker and more fantastical to delve into. The cover, with its hands, frogs, and gold coins, also hints at a rich, magical world. When choosing your own beach books, think about what kind of escape you need. Do you want something completely light and fluffy, or are you craving a deep, immersive story that transports you? Don't forget about portability – physical books are lovely, but an e-reader can pack dozens of stories without taking up much luggage space. And yes, sometimes it's okay to pick a book just because its cover instantly makes you dream of long, sunny days by the sea! Whether it's a family drama set on a picturesque coast or a thrilling mystery keeping you on the edge of your beach towel, the best beach read is the one that makes your vacation even more memorable. I'd love to hear what kind of books you gravitate towards for your own sunny getaways!
