This month, I introduced a selection of eerie classics to my book club, focusing on spine-chilling narratives. Among the notable selections was "Carmilla," a classic vampire novel penned by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, known for its haunting tale of a young woman's mysterious attraction to an ethereal visitor. First published in 1872, this novel paved the way for modern vampire stories and continues to captivate readers today. Another gripping choice was Shirley Jackson's "We Have Always Lived in the Castle," which explores themes of isolation and familial bonds through the eyes of two sisters living on the fringes of society. Published in 1962, its blend of suspense and psychological depth makes it a timeless read. Lastly, we considered "Rebecca" by Daphne du Maurier, a tale of romantic suspense that delves into the haunting secrets of an eerie estate. Revered as one of the best novels of the 20th century, its intricate storytelling and unforgettable atmosphere have earned it a cherished place in literary history. These books not only embody the spooky spirit of the season, but they also provoke thought about women's roles in classic literature and the intense emotional landscapes explored within these narratives. I can't wait to see which story we choose to dive into next!

Carmilla is on my tbr.
