The menstrual cycle consists of several phases that are crucial for understanding female reproductive health. The cycle can be divided into the menstrual phase, follicular phase, ovulation, and luteal phase. 1. **Menstrual Phase (Day 1-5)**: During this phase, the endometrial lining, which has built up in the previous cycle, is shed, resulting in menstruation. Hormones such as estrogen and progesterone are low, triggering the release of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) from the pituitary gland. The goal here is the development of new follicles in the ovaries. 2. **Follicular Phase (Day 1-13)**: Following menstruation, FSH stimulates the maturation of several follicles, but typically only one follicle becomes dominant. This dominant follicle secretes estrogen, which thickens the endometrial lining in preparation for possible pregnancy. Moreover, estrogen provides feedback to the brain to stop FSH production and trigger a surge in luteinizing hormone (LH). 3. **Ovulation (Around Day 14)**: The surge in LH causes the dominant follicle to release an egg, marking ovulation. The egg has a lifespan of about 12-24 hours, creating a fertile window for conception. 4. **Luteal Phase (Day 15-28)**: After ovulation, the remains of the dominant follicle transform into the corpus luteum, which produces progesterone. This hormone further thickens the endometrium, enhancing its vascularity to prepare for a potential implantation of a fertilized egg. 5. **If No Pregnancy Occurs**: If fertilization does not happen, the corpus luteum degenerates into the corpus albicans. A decline in progesterone and estrogen unfolds, leading to the shedding of the endometrial lining, marking the start of a new menstruation cycle. Understanding these phases is critical for nursing students, as it forms the foundation for more advanced topics in reproductive health and women's healthcare.
