Potassium, with a normal range of 3.5-5.0 mEq/L, plays a vital role in cardiac rhythm and muscle contraction. Both hyperkalemia and hypokalemia can lead to life-threatening cardiac issues. Recognizing symptoms such as peaked T-waves or muscle cramps and knowing interventions like administering IV insulin or potassium supplements can save lives. Creatinine levels reflect kidney function more specifically than BUN. Elevated creatinine warns of acute or chronic kidney injury, necessitating medication adjustments especially with nephrotoxic drugs like vancomycin or NSAIDs. The BUN:Creatinine ratio helps differentiate renal causes of dysfunction, an important diagnostic step. White blood cell (WBC) count indicates infection or immune suppression.
