Techniques include airway clearance methods, cautious administration of oxygen especially in COPD patients, and the use of bronchodilators to relieve airway obstruction. When respiratory depression is due to medication such as opioids or sedatives, their effects should be carefully monitored and reversed if necessary. In cases where patients are on mechanical ventilators, adjusting ventilator settings to increase respiratory rate or tidal volume can help correct hypoventilation. Additionally, addressing underlying causes such as infections or neuromuscular diseases is vital for long-term management. Monitoring blood gases regularly is important to assess pH, PaCO2, and bicarbonate (HCO3) levels to guide treatment decisions. Normal bicarbonate levels (22-28 mEq/L) may initially compensate for acute respiratory acidosis, but persistent imbalance can lead to chronic conditions requiring more comprehensive care. Understanding the pathophysiology and clinical presentation of respiratory acidosis enables healthcare professionals to intervene promptly, improving patient outcomes and reducing risks associated with acid-base imbalances.
