ADPIE vs Maslow vs ABCs - When Do You Use Which?

One of the biggest NCLEX mistakes is using the wrong framework.

ABCs → unstable patient

Maslow → stable patient, prioritizing needs

ADPIE → nursing process & next steps

And remember:

ABCs override everything when life is threatened.

This breakdown is how students stop overthinking and start answering confidently.

... Read moreWhen studying for the NCLEX, understanding when to use ADPIE, Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, or ABCs can transform your ability to prioritize patient care confidently. From my experience, the ABCs (Airway, Breathing, Circulation) are absolute priorities when a patient is unstable or facing life-threatening issues. Focusing on airway patency or ensuring adequate perfusion often dictates the immediate response. However, once the patient is stable, Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs becomes incredibly useful to prioritize care based on physiological needs, safety, love/belonging, esteem, and self-actualization. For example, if a patient is stable but experiencing anxiety or psychosocial concerns, Maslow helps identify which needs to address first. This mental framework prevents over-focusing on physical needs alone when emotional or educational needs also impact recovery. Finally, ADPIE—Assess, Diagnose, Plan, Implement, Evaluate—is the formal nursing process useful for organizing care steps and ensuring systematic assessment and intervention. It guides what to do in sequence after stabilizing the patient and prioritizing needs. A key tip I found helpful is that ABCs override Maslow’s hierarchy when there is a conflict involving life-threatening conditions, and Maslow overrides ADPIE when immediate threats are not present. Also, always assess thoroughly before acting, unless a clear emergency demands swift ABCs intervention. By internalizing these distinctions, you stop second-guessing and start responding with clarity—a crucial skill in both exam settings and real-world nursing practice. Prioritize stabilizing the patient first, then use Maslow's needs for broader care focus, and rely on ADPIE to systematically advance the nursing process. This approach reduces errors, boosts confidence, and ensures patient-centered care.
