We need to talk: OVERCONSUMPTION

Not only harmful towards young women and our planet but also wasteful in general. Micro trends will not bring you the comfort you think it will. It is a small rush of feeling a part of a group online that you feel a connection to.

Stop overconsumption and think of the real price being paid when you choose to buy an item or several of an item just because you think it will bring you joy or allow you to fit in more.

2024/10/15 Edited to

... Read moreThe original post really resonated with me because I’ve definitely been caught in the cycle of overconsumption, especially with micro-trends. It's so easy to get sucked into the idea that buying the latest viral item will bring comfort or make you feel more connected. But as I've learned, the true consequences go far beyond our wallets. I started asking myself: how do you even know if you're overconsuming? It’s not always obvious. For me, some key 'signs of overconsumption' started popping up. Have you ever bought something just because it was trending, like those pastel insulated tumblers everyone had to have, only for it to end up in the back of your cupboard? Or maybe you’ve seen a specific body scrub go viral, bought several jars for the aesthetic, and then never actually used them? That was me! It's that feeling of needing to have what everyone else has, often driven by social media, without truly considering if you'll use it or if it aligns with your actual needs. Another huge sign is the constant pressure to keep up. I noticed I was always feeling like I needed to upgrade or replace items that were perfectly fine, just because a newer, shinier version or a different 'aesthetic' was trending. This often leads to accumulating unused products, contributing to massive waste. Think about fast fashion micro-trends: buying clothes, sometimes even shapewear, to fit into an unrealistic body image promoted online, only for them to be worn once or twice and then discarded. The OCR recognized how these trends target women's bodies for thinner, unrealistic figures, which is a major contributor to negative body image and harmful consumer choices. And let's not forget the financial strain and the environmental impact. Those trendy items, often resold at inflated prices by opportunists, contribute to waste and pollution long after the fleeting joy of purchase wears off. The OCR mentioned instances where trends influence youth to use potentially harmful chemicals on their skin – a stark reminder that not all trends are benign. It’s a harsh truth, but our eager consumption fuels industries that sometimes neglect ethical production or environmental responsibility. Breaking free from this cycle isn't easy, but it’s incredibly freeing. What helped me was pausing before every purchase and asking: Do I genuinely need this? Will it add lasting value to my life? Am I buying this because *I* want it, or because I feel pressured to conform? I’ve also found power in unfollowing accounts that constantly promote consumerism and instead focusing on experiences, learning new skills, or simply enjoying what I already own. It's about shifting from a mindset of constant acquisition to one of appreciation and mindful consumption. It's a journey, but recognizing the signs is the first crucial step towards a more sustainable and fulfilling life.
