Part 3: First Transmission

Hey everyone! It's been wild diving back into the world of my Labubu comic, especially with this 'First Transmission' arc. You saw Chestnut looking pretty distressed with those red marks on their chest, and Toffee trying to figure out what was going on. Creating these scenes, especially the part where Chestnut says, 'Just a cramp. You know how stress affects me,' really pulled from my own experiences. It's funny how sometimes, what we brush off as minor stress can be the first sign of something bigger brewing, right? I wanted to show that even in a whimsical world, characters can face very relatable internal struggles before external threats become apparent. Developing the dynamic between Chestnut and Toffee has been so much fun. Toffee's initial apology, 'I'm sorry, Chestnut. I know I can get.. hard to be around,' and Chestnut's immediate reassurance, 'Hard to be around? Of course not!' – it’s that kind of sweet, supportive friendship I love to explore. Even when things get intense, like the sudden onset of the 'Labubonic Plague' mystery, their bond is what keeps the story grounded. These characters have truly grown on me, and seeing them reassure each other, holding hands even when facing uncertainty, is a powerful moment I think resonates with many. That panel where Toffee suggests, 'I guess I owe you a kiss before this "prank" turns our brains to mush..?' was a bit of comic relief before the storm. It was my way of showing their playful side, even amidst growing tension. It highlights how we often use humor as a coping mechanism, even when deep down, we might be worried. But then, boom! The EMERGENCY ALERT SYSTEM flashes across the TV, telling everyone to close doors/windows and turn off AC/heating. That scene with the silhouetted figures looking out into the unknown really sets the stage for what's next. It's not just a comic anymore; it's a full-blown crisis, and I'm so excited (and a little terrified!) to see where Chestnut and Toffee's journey takes them. The abrupt shift from personal drama to a global emergency was a narrative choice I made to heighten the stakes and push the characters out of their comfort zones. For those of you who've been following my Labubu comics, you know I love to blend lighthearted moments with deeper themes. This 'infectionau' storyline, while fictional, truly touches on anxieties we all face – the fear of the unknown, the impact of stress on our bodies, and how we lean on loved ones when things get tough. Crafting these panels, making sure the expressions convey the right emotion – from Chestnut's initial cramp to the palpable tension when the alert goes off – it’s a detailed process. I spend hours sketching, digitally coloring, and refining dialogue, trying to capture that perfect blend of narrative and visual storytelling. Bringing these Labubu-inspired characters to life and exploring complex emotional landscapes through their adventures is incredibly rewarding.
