Painting on THRIFTED shirt 🥰🥰

Stepping away from the canvas to bring art to life on fabric is such an exciting experience! Like many of you, I've always loved the idea of wearing something truly unique, and giving a thrifted piece a new lease on life with paint is incredibly rewarding. My latest project involves painting striking red artsy lung outlines onto a simple white thrifted shirt using Angelus paint, and I'm already thrilled with the process. Why choose to paint on thrifted clothes? For starters, it’s a fantastic way to embrace sustainability. Instead of buying new, you're repurposing an existing garment, reducing waste, and giving it a second chance. Plus, it's incredibly budget-friendly! You can find amazing pieces, sometimes even with a visible brand tag that speaks to its history, for just a few dollars. The real magic, though, is the chance to create something that’s 100% you. No fast fashion piece can ever match the personality of a hand-painted design. When it comes to fabric painting, choosing the right materials is key. I opted for Angelus paint because it's renowned for its durability and flexibility on various surfaces, including fabric. It's designed to withstand cracking, peeling, and fading, which is exactly what you want for wearable art. Using a dedicated fabric paint ensures your creation will last through washes and wear, making your effort worthwhile. Before you start, make sure your thrifted shirt is clean and dry. Sometimes a quick wash and iron can prepare the surface perfectly for painting. Getting your design from your head onto the shirt can be done in a few ways. For my artsy lung design, I started with a rough sketch on paper. You can then freehand directly onto the fabric with a light pencil (which will wash out), use stencils, or even a light box to transfer more intricate patterns. Having a clear idea of your red outlines for the artsy lung design really helps guide your paintbrush. I always recommend placing a piece of cardboard or plastic inside the shirt to prevent paint from bleeding through to the back. Good lighting, perhaps even bathed in sunlight if you're working outdoors, can make a huge difference in seeing your true colors and details. Once you’re happy with your art, follow the paint manufacturer’s instructions for heat-setting. This usually involves ironing over the design with a dry iron for a few minutes, which permanently binds the paint to the fabric fibers. After heat-setting, your custom tee is ready to be worn and admired! It's such a fulfilling journey to take a simple white thrifted shirt and turn it into a statement piece.
