My Honest Nursing School Tips

✨Practice is EVERYTHING

practice and study even when you don’t want to or can’t. I have studied and on vacations, at events, and anywhere because the amount of information you’ll need to know is crazy! 😢And practice skills when you get the chance, if the lab is open USE IT. ❤️Use every resource you have available!!!

✨Find Friends!

Nursing School is chaotic and stressful, finding a few friends in your cohort is important because once you start school your others friends might not understand. Study with them too!

✨Find a Happy Place

In the midst of school chaos you need to find somewhere that will provide relief and comfort. My happy place is at my lake house, fishing. But it can also be at home in a comfy chair, playing on my phone. ❤️Use the space you have to relax and remember why your doing it!

... Read moreStarting nursing school is an exciting but often daunting journey, especially when you're just beginning! Building on some of the core advice like finding friends and a happy place, I want to share even more practical strategies that truly helped me navigate the intensity of my nursing program. These are the additional nursing school success tips for beginners I wish I had known from day one. First, let's talk more about 'Practice is EVERYTHING.' It's not just about putting in hours; it's about effective practice. For example, when it came to hands-on skills, the 'IV Trainer Practice Is Key' advice from our lab was gold. Don't just show up; actively engage with the equipment. If you have an IV trainer, practice insertion until it feels like second nature. Beyond skills, for theoretical knowledge, try active recall. Instead of just rereading your notes, turn them into questions and quiz yourself. Flashcards, drawing diagrams, or explaining concepts out loud to a study partner are incredibly powerful. This approach helps you understand, not just memorize, which is crucial for those critical thinking questions on exams. Really grasp the 'why' behind everything in your nursing program, not just the 'what.' Next, time management became my secret weapon. With so much information to absorb and clinical rotations to attend, a solid schedule is non-negotiable. I started using a weekly planner to map out my classes, study blocks, clinical shifts, and even my breaks. Prioritizing tasks using an 'A, B, C' system helped immensely – 'A' for urgent and important, 'B' for important but not urgent, and 'C' for less critical tasks. Breaking down large assignments into smaller, manageable chunks made them less intimidating. For instance, if I had a huge care plan due, I'd dedicate 30 minutes each day to a specific section rather than trying to do it all at once. This prevented burnout and kept me consistently moving forward. Beyond finding friends within your cohort, cultivate a broader support system. My family and even an experienced nurse I shadowed became invaluable. They might not understand the specific pressures, but their encouragement and willingness to listen were lifelines. And about your 'happy place' – make sure you truly 'FIND YOUR HAPPY PLACE USE IT TO REST WHEN' you need it. This isn't just about escaping; it's about intentional self-care. Schedule time for sleep, nutritious meals, and even short bursts of exercise. It sounds counterintuitive when you're swamped, but these are the foundational elements that prevent total exhaustion. Learning to say 'no' to non-essential commitments was also a huge game-changer for protecting my energy. Finally, remember that nursing school is a marathon, not a sprint. There will be tough days, challenging exams, and moments of doubt. Embrace a growth mindset. It's okay to not know everything, and it's okay to make mistakes – that's how we learn. Celebrate every small victory, whether it's acing a quiz or successfully performing a new skill in clinicals. Keep reminding yourself why you chose this path. That passion will be your fuel during the most demanding times. You've got this!
