... Read moreHeart failure is a complex condition treated with various medications classified into several groups. Among the primary treatments are ACE Inhibitors and ARBs, which lower blood pressure. Examples include Lisinopril and Losartan; it's crucial to monitor potassium levels when using these drugs. Beta-blockers like Atenolol and Metoprolol help reduce heart rate and improve conditions for patients with concurrent issues like COPD and asthma. However, patients should be cautioned about potential side effects, including bradycardia and breathing problems. Calcium channel blockers such as Nifedipine, Cardizem, and Verapamil also play a vital role in managing heart failure by lowering heart rate and blood pressure. Monitoring blood pressure and heart rate before administration is essential. Digoxin is another key medication that increases cardiac contractility, making it useful in heart failure management, but requires careful monitoring of pulse for safety against toxicity. Other classes include diuretics, which help manage fluid overload. Furosemide and Spironolactone are commonly used but care must be taken to monitor potassium levels and hydration status. In conclusion, understanding these medications' mechanisms, uses, and potential side effects is essential for nursing students and practitioners to provide effective care for heart failure patients.
