I never really thought of myself as an artist.
When people hear “artist,” they picture someone with a paintbrush, a canvas, or a sketchbook. But somewhere along the way, I realized art isn’t limited to those things.
Every braid starts as an idea. I play with color, shape, texture, and movement to create something unique for each person who sits in my chair. What I do is more than a hairstyle. it’s a form of expression, creativity, and storytelling.
For years, I called it “just hair.” Now I can see it for what it is: art.
And maybe being an artist isn’t about the medium you choose. Maybe it’s about creating something that didn’t exist before and leaving people feeling a little more confident, a little more seen, and a little more themselves.
So today, I’m embracing it.

When I first started braiding, I never imagined it as a form of art, but over time, I realized how much creativity goes into every braid. Crafting braids allows me to experiment with various elements like color contrasts, intricate patterns, and textures that bring each hairstyle to life. Each person's hair tells a different story, and braiding is a way to visually express their personality, culture, and mood. One thing I've learned is that braiding isn't just about aesthetics; it's also about the experience. When someone sits in my chair, they’re entrusting me with their personal expression. I take time to understand what they want to communicate through their hair, whether it's boldness, elegance, or a mix of styles. This collaborative process feels like co-creating a piece of living art. I also love how versatile braids are. From classic box braids to creative, colorful designs, they provide endless possibilities. Using different thread colors or beads gives extra dimension, making the style not only beautiful but uniquely tailored. Braids can be a protective hairstyle or a fashion statement, adding to their significance. For many clients, braids are empowering. They boost confidence by offering a fresh look and a sense of identity. Seeing the smiles after finishing a braid session reminds me that hair art has the power to uplift and change how people feel about themselves. Every braid is a journey, and as an artist, I’m grateful to create meaningful, dynamic works that go beyond traditional art forms. Embracing braids as art has transformed how I view my work—from a hairstyle to a personal, creative expression shared between artist and client.
