where to get room decor on a BUDGET
room decor can get expensive fast so here’s all the room decor i have that was either free or super cheap!
❤️ candles are a great way to decorate your room, especially if you have shaped candles! i find the best smelling and cutest candles and five below, tjmaxx, and something the thrift store
❤️ hand-me-downs are a must imo! i use a lot of family photos given to me in the frames they were originally in and i am obsessed with these frames
❤️ 4x6 prints are an easy way to use specific photos you like as your room decor. you can basically use any photo and printing is super simple. i get mine printed at walmart where the prints are about 50 cents each
❤️ thrifting items is one of the easiest ways to find cheap decorations for you room. i look for items like mirrors and lamps specifically when i go thrifting and often they’ll have some really cool ones!
❤️ movie posters cover up a good amount of space so if you’re dealing with a lot of white space they are a must. i work at a movie theater so i get picks at all of the posters for free. oftentimes if you go to a movie theater and are interested in a poster you can give them your information and when they’re done with it they’ll either give it to you or charge you only a couple dollars
❤️ diys are my favorite way to decorate, especially paintings. i love to paint and a lot of my friends do as well so i utilize these crafts on my wall space!
❤️ glued puzzles are a great option when you’re looking for something that will be utilized as well as displayed. once you put together your puzzle you can glue it together with something like mod podge and hang it up to admire your hard work!
❤️ when i come across stickers i LOVE and don’t want to waste, i’ll stick some tape to the back and put them on the wall to fill in small spaces
❤️ i love hanging up my cards for a personalized touch. cards mean a lot to me especially from my family and friends so i like to hold on to them, and if i like how they look i might as well look at them all the time instead of tucking them away somewhere
❤️ magazine cutouts are everything!!! you can find some really cool magazines in thrift stores and for free online. i found this elle magazine with billie eilish on the cover for 25 cents at a thrift store!!

Okay, so the main post mentioned thrifting, and seriously, it's a goldmine! But to really nail it, you need a strategy. When I hit up my local thrift stores, I always have a few things in mind. First, look for structure – a solid wooden frame, a unique glass vase, or even a sturdy old book can be completely transformed with a bit of paint or imagination. Don't be afraid of a little wear and tear; that's where the magic of DIY comes in. For instance, that cool thrifted lamp I found (like the one in the pic with the beaded fringe!) might have had a dingy shade, but the base was perfect. A quick swap of the shade, and voilà – brand new vibe! Also, keep an eye out for vintage textiles or scarves; they can be amazing wall hangings or even repurposed into pillow covers. Always check for quality and potential for upcycling. A good clean and a fresh coat of spray paint can make a world of difference. Speaking of transforming spaces, let's talk about creating that epic magazine collage wall aesthetic for your bedroom! This was a game-changer for me. It’s not just about slapping random cutouts on the wall; it’s about curating a vibe. Start by gathering a bunch of old magazines – thrift stores often have them for super cheap (remember that Elle magazine with Billie Eilish I scored?). Look for images, colors, and words that resonate with your style. I love mixing fashion spreads with abstract art, cool fonts, and even meaningful quotes. Lay everything out on the floor first to get a sense of the flow before you commit. Overlap pieces slightly for a layered look, and use a good, non-damaging adhesive like painter's tape rolled up, or even Mod Podge if you want it permanent and sealed. It fills up a big space, tells a story, and literally costs pennies. It’s a super personal touch that makes your room uniquely *you*. The original post mentioned movie posters and DIY paintings, which are fantastic. But if you’re still staring at some blank spots or want more personalized flair, let me share a couple more DIY wall art ideas. Have you ever considered framed fabric swatches? Grab some remnant fabric from a craft store sale bin or repurpose an old scarf with a cool pattern. Pop it into a cheap thrifted frame, and you instantly have sophisticated, unique art. Another favorite of mine is creating a 'memory string.' Instead of just sticking stickers to the wall, string up some twine or fairy lights and use mini clothespins to clip up your favorite small photos, postcards, ticket stubs, or even those lovely personalized cards from friends and family. It’s dynamic, easy to change out, and a wonderful way to display all those little bits of joy. And for a truly unique touch, why not press some flowers or interesting leaves and arrange them in a simple frame? Nature’s art, completely free!
