But by focusing on contour shading, I learned how to create that amazing three-dimensional look. It's all about observing how light dances across the surface of things like an apple or a tall pumpkin, and then using your pencil to mimic those changes in light and shadow. Here’s my simple approach to getting started with fruit shading drawing: Observe & Sketch: Pick a fruit, like an apple or a curved gourd. Lightly sketch its basic outline. Identify your light source – crucial for realistic shadows and highlights. Contour-Guided Shading: Begin adding very light layers of graphite, following the contours of the fruit. These lines aren't just edges; they're guides for its curves, helping you build form. Gradually add more layers in shadowed areas, perhaps using a softer pencil (like 2B or 4B) for deeper tones. This is how you create a rich, shaded fruit drawing. Refine Details: Notice subtle textures and don't forget highlights – those bright spots where light is strongest.
