The Case for Purgatory 🔥✝️

What is purgatory, and why do Catholics believe in it? Bear with me during this very long post if you’re interested in this topic!

🌑🌑🌑🌑🌑

Paragraphs 1030-1032 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church state:

“All who die in God's grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven.

The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned. The Church formulated her doctrine of faith on Purgatory especially at the Councils of Florence and Trent. The tradition of the Church, by reference to certain texts of Scripture, speaks of a cleansing fire:

As for certain lesser faults, we must believe that, before the Final Judgment, there is a purifying fire. He who is truth says that whoever utters blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will be pardoned neither in this age nor in the age to come. From this sentence we understand that certain offenses can be forgiven in this age, but certain others in the age to come.

This teaching is also based on the practice of prayer for the dead, already mentioned in Sacred Scripture: "Therefore [Judas Maccabeus] made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin. “From the beginning the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God. The Church also commends almsgiving, indulgences, and works of penance undertaken on behalf of the dead:

Let us help and commemorate them. If Job's sons were purified by their father's sacrifice, why would we doubt that our offerings for the dead bring them some consolation? Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and to offer our prayers for them.”

🌑🌑🌑🌑🌑

❌purgatory is NOT:

- a middle place between heaven and hell

- a way to minimize the sacrifice on the cross

- a replacement for the atonement

- a second chance to get out of hell

✅Purgatory IS:

- a state of cleansing before heaven if a person dies without being perfectly purified

- only for the saved; everyone who goes to purgatory will eventually go to heaven

- how imperfectly purified souls become fully cleansed before entering heaven, because nothing unclean can enter into heaven (revelation 21:27)

📖Scriptural support for purgatory:

🌑2 Maccabees 12:42-45

”and they turned to supplication, praying that the sin that had been committed might be wholly blotted out. The noble Judas exhorted the people to keep themselves free from sin, for they had seen with their own eyes what had happened as the result of the sin of those who had fallen. He also took up a collection, man by man, to the amount of two thousand drachmas of silver, and sent it to Jerusalem to provide for a sin offering. In doing this he acted very well and honorably, taking account of the resurrection. For if he were not expecting that those who had fallen would rise again, it would have been superfluous and foolish to pray for the dead. But if he was looking to the splendid reward that is laid up for those who fall asleep in godliness, it was a holy and pious thought. Therefore he made atonement for the dead, so that they might be delivered from their sin.“

☀️emphasis on “therefore he made atonement for the dead, so that they might be delivered from their sin”.

🌑Matthew 12:32

“And whoever says a word against the Son of man will be forgiven; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come”

☀️This age or the age to come insinuates multiple realms of existence where you could be cleansed; alive here on earth, and in purgatory during cleansing.

🌑Matthew 5:25-26

”Make friends quickly with your accuser, while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison; truly I say to you, you will never get out till you have paid the last penny”

☀️till you have paid the last penny: insinuating that there will come and end to the metaphorical prison sentence, once all sin is wiped clean and you are purified.

🌑1 Corinthians 3:11-15

“For no other foundation can any one lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any one builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble—each man’s work will become manifest; for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work which any man has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire.”

☀️This scripture is undeniably about the judgment God places on us after our death and how our works are tested through fire. The bad will be burnt up and destroyed, while the good will be preserved and saved. The fire will purify us and reveal what is left; saving us through fire. This passage does not mean hell: there is no saving from hell.

🔥Fire is spoken about in two different ways throughout scripture: a purifying agent, and a means of destruction. In the above scripture, it is spoken of as a purifying agent (puros).

🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸

“Purgatory (Lat., "purgare", to make clean, to purify) in accordance with Catholic teaching is a place or condition of temporal punishment for those who, departing this life in God's grace, are, not entirely free from venial faults, or have not fully paid the satisfaction due to their transgressions.” - newadvent.com

Purgatory is a dogmatic teaching within the Catholic Church, meaning all adherents to the faith must accept this teaching or they are gravely sinning. The Catholic Church officially dogmatized this doctrine in the 1400s, meaning prior to this time, it wasn’t required to believe it (because it wasn’t infallibly declared until this point), but it was always a belief of the Catholic Church.

✝️✝️✝️✝️✝️

Early Christian writings on purgatory:

💙 “And after the exhibition, Tryphaena again received her [Thecla]. For her daughter Falconilla had died, and said to her in a dream: ‘Mother, you shall have this stranger Thecla in my place, in order that she may pray concerning me, and that I may be transferred to the place of the righteous’” (Acts of Paul and Thecla [A.D. 160]).

💙 “[T]hat very night, this was shown to me in a vision: I [Perpetua] saw Dinocrates going out from a gloomy place, where also there were several others, and he was parched and very thirsty, with a filthy countenance and pallid color, and the wound on his face which he had when he died. This Dinocrates had been my brother after the flesh, seven years of age, who died miserably with disease. . . . For him I had made my prayer, and between him and me there was a large interval, so that neither of us could approach to the other . . . and [I] knew that my brother was in suffering. But I trusted that my prayer would bring help to his suffering. . . . I made my prayer for my brother day and night, groaning and weeping that he might be granted to me. Then, on the day on which we remained in fetters, this was shown to me: I saw that the place which I had formerly observed to be in gloom was now bright; and Dinocrates, with a clean body well clad, was finding refreshment. . . . [And] he went away from the water to play joyously, after the manner of children, and I awoke. Then I understood that he was translated from the place of punishment” (The Martyrdom of Perpetua and Felicity 2:3–4 [A.D. 202]).

💙 TERTULLIAN: We offer sacrifices for the dead on their birthday anniversaries [the date of death—birth into eternal life]” (The Crown 3:3 [A.D. 211]).

“A woman, after the death of her husband . . . prays for his soul and asks that he may, while waiting, find rest; and that he may share in the first resurrection. And each year, on the anniversary of his death, she offers the sacrifice” (Monogamy 10:1–2 [A.D. 216]).

💙 CYRIL OF JERUSALEM: “Then we make mention also of those who have already fallen asleep: first, the patriarchs, prophets, apostles, and martyrs, that through their prayers and supplications God would receive our petition; next, we make mention also of the holy fathers and bishops who have already fallen asleep, and, to put it simply, of all among us who have already fallen asleep, for we believe that it will be of very great benefit to the souls of those for whom the petition is carried up, while this holy and most solemn sacrifice is laid out” (Catechetical Lectures 23:5:9 [A.D. 350]).

💙GREGORY OF NYSSA: “If a man distinguish in himself what is peculiarly human from that which is irrational, and if he be on the watch for a life of greater urbanity for himself, in this present life he will purify himself of any evil contracted, overcoming the irrational by reason. If he has inclined to the irrational pressure of the passions, using for the passions the cooperating hide of things irrational, he may afterward in a quite different manner be very much interested in what is better, when, after his departure out of the body, he gains knowledge of the difference between virtue and vice and finds that he is not able to partake of divinity until he has been purged of the filthy contagion in his soul by the purifying fire” (Sermon on the Dead [A.D. 382]).

💙JOHN CHRYSOSTOM: “Let us help and commemorate them. If Job’s sons were purified by their father’s sacrifice [Job 1:5], why would we doubt that our offerings for the dead bring them some consolation? Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and to offer our prayers for them” (Homilies on First Corinthians 41:5 [A.D. 392]).

💙AUGUSTINE: “Temporal punishments are suffered by some in this life only, by some after death, by some both here and hereafter, but all of them before that last and strictest judgment. But not all who suffer temporal punishments after death will come to eternal punishments, which are to follow after that judgment” (The City of God 21:13 [A.D. 419]).

“That there should be some fire even after this life is not incredible, and it can be inquired into and either be discovered or left hidden whether some of the faithful may be saved, some more slowly and some more quickly in the greater or lesser degree in which they loved the good things that perish, through a certain purgatorial fire” (Handbook on Faith, Hope, and Charity 18:69 [A.D. 421]).

There are many more writings of the early church fathers about the doctrine of purgatory, though I think you get the picture.

If you have followed along to this point, thank you for reading! I hope I have answered some questions you may have; always feel free to ask more.

... Read moreBeyond the theological definitions, many of us, myself included, often wonder: 'Is Purgatory scary?' When I first encountered the concept, vivid images of suffering souls and fiery realms, much like those in classical religious paintings depicting distressed figures reaching upwards towards divine figures like Mary and baby Jesus, filled my mind. It's a common misconception, fueled by dramatic artistic interpretations, that Purgatory is a terrifying 'mini-hell' or a place where salvation is still in doubt. But through my own journey of faith and studying the Catechism, I've come to understand it differently, finding comfort rather than fear in its truth. For Catholics, Purgatory isn't a place of damnation or a second chance to avoid hell. Instead, it’s a loving, purifying process for souls already destined for Heaven. Think of it less as punishment and more like spiritual 'fine-tuning' – a necessary cleansing to achieve the perfect holiness required to enter God’s presence. The 'fire' mentioned in scripture, often depicted in art, isn't meant to be eternal torment like hellfire. Rather, it's a 'purifying fire' (as 1 Corinthians 3:11-15 suggests) that burns away imperfections, much like gold is refined by fire to remove impurities. This perspective transforms Purgatory from a frightening concept into one of profound hope and divine mercy, where souls eagerly anticipate their full union with God. This deeper understanding also sheds light on queries like 'what is purgatory like' and 'why do we pray for the dead.' While we can't fully grasp the experience, the Church teaches that our prayers, masses, sacrifices, and acts of charity can truly assist those undergoing this purification. It’s an incredible act of communal love, a way for us, the living, to help our brothers and sisters in Christ reach the beatific vision more swiftly. This concept of intercession is often beautifully captured in art, where figures like Mary and the saints, often surrounded by cherubs in the heavens, are depicted interceding for the souls in Purgatory, reinforcing the communion of saints. It’s a powerful reminder that our connection with fellow believers transcends death. It's also crucial to remember what Purgatory is *not*. It's not a middle ground between heaven and hell, nor does it minimize Christ's sacrifice on the cross. His sacrifice opens the doors to heaven; Purgatory ensures we are prepared to enter fully purified. Dispel any fear that it's a desperate plea for salvation; those in Purgatory are already saved. So, while artistic depictions might show intense imagery of souls, angels, and divine figures, remember the core message: Purgatory is God's final act of mercy, preparing us fully for the joy of Heaven. It’s a testament to His immense love, ensuring that nothing unclean enters His divine presence, but also that every soul who dies in His grace is brought to perfect sanctity. My hope is that understanding this truth brings you as much peace as it has brought me.
