Help! First haircut?
Hey guys, I need advice 🥹 I know I need to start trimming my daughter’s hair but I don’t know when… and I’ll be honest, I’m a little emotional over it. She had a small strand of hair left from being born that’s much longer than the rest, and that’s honestly the hair I feel most sad about cutting. She was born with it! And what if it doesn’t curl the same after? Ugh I’m having so much trouble with this 😭
Oh, mama, I completely get where you're coming from! That first haircut for your little one is such a milestone, and it's totally normal to feel a mix of emotions. I went through the same thing with my daughter, who also had that precious ‘baby hair’ from birth. It felt like I was cutting a piece of her infancy away, and the worries about her curls were constant! Many parents wonder when the 'right' time for an initial haircut is. There’s no hard and fast rule, but generally, if the hair is getting in their eyes, causing tangles, or you're starting to notice split ends (yes, even babies get them!), it might be time. For some babies with long hair from birth, that first trim can happen surprisingly early, while for others, it might be closer to their second or third birthday. My friend with a baby boy often found himself trimming around the ears earlier than I did with my girl, just to keep things neat! Your concern about her beautiful blonde, curly hair is so valid! I had similar fears. The good news is, often a trim can actually help define those curls better by removing dry or thin ends that weigh them down. While baby hair can sometimes be different from toddler hair, a gentle trim usually enhances its natural pattern rather than ruining it. Think of it as shaping her natural beauty! To make the actual haircut for your toddler girl less stressful for both of you, here are a few things I found helpful: Choose the right environment: Some prefer a kids' salon with fun chairs and distractions; others feel more comfortable doing a quick snip at home during nap time or while they're distracted by a favorite show. Keep it quick: A professional stylist skilled with kids can be super fast. If you're doing it yourself, just aim for a quick trim of the problem areas. Distraction is key: Snacks, toys, a tablet – whatever works! Involve them (if older): Let them hold a comb or choose a fun clip for after. Don't force it: If they're really upset, take a break and try another time. A few snips over a couple of days is fine. For girls, a simple trim to keep it out of their eyes or a shoulder-length cut can be really practical. If your little one has thin hair, a slight trim can sometimes make it appear fuller. And don't forget to take plenty of 'before and after' photos! It’s amazing to see how much just a small trim can freshen up their look. Some girls love little pigtails or braids even with shorter hair! And for that special strand of hair she was born with? Definitely save it! I kept a tiny lock of my daughter's first trim in a keepsake box. It’s a wonderful reminder of that fleeting baby stage. Remember, mama, you're not cutting away her childhood, you're just helping her hair grow beautifully. You've got this!

Off topic but how do you get your daughters hair so thick? I swear my 20 month old is still halfway bald 😭😂
