Swipe to bake unicorn bread!
Hey y’all! I made unicorn bread today. I used my normal recipe for bread and added some food coloring and sprinkles :)
Creating magical unicorn bread at home is such a fun and rewarding experience! I remember the first time I decided to try it, I was a little intimidated, thinking it would be complicated to get those vibrant swirls. But honestly, it's much easier than you'd imagine, and the results are always spectacular. It's all about taking your favorite basic bread recipe and giving it a whimsical twist. First things first, let's talk about the bread base. While the original post mentions using a 'normal recipe for bread,' I've found that a slightly sweet, enriched dough works best for unicorn bread. Think brioche, challah, or even a simple milk bread recipe. These kinds of doughs tend to be softer, more pliable, and provide a beautiful canvas for the colors. If you're using a standard sandwich bread recipe, that works too, just make sure your dough is well-kneaded and elastic before you start adding color. The real magic happens with the food coloring. I highly recommend using gel food coloring over liquid, as it's much more concentrated, so you need less to achieve vibrant hues, and it won't thin out your dough. Pick three to four of your favorite 'unicorn' colors – I usually go for pink, blue, purple, and sometimes a touch of yellow or green. After your dough has had its first rise, divide it into the number of colors you're using. Gently knead a small amount of gel food coloring into each portion until the color is evenly distributed. Be careful not to over-knead at this stage, as you want to maintain the dough's structure. Once your dough portions are colored, it's time for the fun part: layering and swirling! Roll each colored dough portion into a rectangle. Then, stack them one on top of the other. You can then gently roll them up like a jelly roll, or cut them into strips and braid them. For those distinct unicorn swirls, I like to gently twist the stacked dough before rolling it into a log. This creates those beautiful, marbleized patterns that make UNICORN BREAD so captivating. After shaping, place your colorful dough into a greased loaf pan for its second rise. Now, for the 'Sprink' factor! Sprinkles are essential for full unicorn effect. You can gently press them into the top of the dough before the second rise, or sprinkle them on immediately after baking while the bread is still warm, so they stick. I prefer adding them before baking, as they get slightly toasted and meld wonderfully with the crust. Rainbow nonpareils or long, thin jimmie sprinkles work wonderfully for this. Make sure you use oven-safe sprinkles if adding before baking to prevent them from melting completely. Bake your unicorn bread according to your recipe's instructions, usually around 350°F (175°C) for 30-40 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through. The aroma filling your kitchen will be incredible! Once out of the oven, let it cool slightly before slicing to reveal the stunning colorful interior. This bread is fantastic on its own, toasted with butter, or even as a colorful base for a fun breakfast sandwich. It's a guaranteed smile-maker for kids and adults alike, perfect for birthdays, playdates, or just a whimsical weekend treat!
