Toddlers and pictures🙃

Is it just my toddler or does yours also HATE having their pictures taken?! My daughter has always disliked it and will intentionally make angry faces and try to hide her face. The weird thing is she loves taking pictures, she can point the camera at me and say “smile!” or “say cheese!” and it makes her happy. I don’t understand!!

... Read moreIt's so interesting how our little ones go through so many 'toddler change' phases, isn't it? The photo-taking dilemma is incredibly common. Many a 'mother and toddler' duo has faced this exact challenge! Just like your little one, my son also went through a stage where the camera became his arch-nemesis. He'd instantly cover his face with his hands, much like the little one in the blue rain jacket in your pictures, or pivot and just walk away from the camera as soon as it appeared. It’s almost like they develop a sixth sense for when we want to capture a moment, and then they decide, 'Nope, not today!' I’ve heard from so many other moms that this can be about a few things. Sometimes, it’s their burgeoning independence – being told to 'smile' or 'say cheese' feels like a command, and they're testing their boundaries by refusing. Other times, they're so engrossed in their play or exploration that stopping for a picture feels like an interruption. They're living in the moment, and posing isn't on their agenda! It's a significant 'toddler change' from when they might have been perfectly happy to pose as a baby. Over time, I've picked up a few tricks that sometimes help. Instead of always trying to get that perfect, posed shot, I started focusing on candid moments. When they're happily playing, engrossed in a toy, or running around outside (maybe even in their favorite blue rain jacket!), quietly snapping photos without them noticing can yield some of the most precious and authentic pictures. Also, getting down to their eye level makes a huge difference. It feels less imposing. Another strategy is to make it a game. Just like your daughter loves taking pictures herself, letting them be the photographer for a bit can shift their perspective. Or, we'd play 'peek-a-boo' with the camera, where I'd snap a quick shot as they uncovered their face. Sometimes, even simple instructions like 'make a silly face!' work better than 'smile,' as it gives them a sense of control and fun. If they really don't want to, I try to respect that. Pushing it too much can create a negative association with photos, which is the last thing we want. What other 'mother and toddler' strategies have you found helpful when your little one is in a 'no photos' mood? It's fascinating how much 'toddler change' can impact something as simple as family pictures!
