Helpful habits to maintain your marriage
You hear this memorable advice constantly, “Maintain your marriage.” And, it’s ardently true to sustain an ardent relationship. You need to maintain your marriage or its “motor” will fizzle and fail.
So, here are some habits that act as motor oil that will keep your marriage thriving and the “spark plugs” sparking.
Date days/ nights -
keep dating each other habitually to continually “rev up” your relationship and fully reconnect.
Nix the excuses:
“We’re always busy.”
“We don’t have a babysitter.”
“We are on a budget.”
It’s imperative to hire a babysitter (if no “village”) in order to dote and dine or just walk and talk while holding hands. If you’re on a budget, go on “home dates”. Flirt and play board games or reminisce your beginnings. In the core of your mind, you and your spouse will start hearing the initial wedding march song and re-bond.
Date days/ nights initiate intimate thoughts and conversation that originate the “oneness”.
Openly communicate -
As the saying goes, “Don’t sweep things under the rug.” And, that “given broom” of advice is also crucial.
If you and your spouse do not openly communicate and ‘sweep things under the rug’, especially crumby issues, those crumbs will become moldy. Issues will never be truly cleaned, forgiven, and forgotten.
So, take the “dust pan” of communication out of the corner of the pantry and “clean up” crumbs on a daily basis (if any). If communication darkens under the rug, the relationship becomes estranged and spouses become strangers.
“In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry. - Ephesians 4:26
Most importantly, Pray with one another -
Keep your sights on God, not solely on each other, because you are going to inevitably fail one another. Keep your marriage habitually holy by keeping Christ in the center and hold hands and pray. Look down at each other’s ring fingers that symbolize a circle of unending love.
Pray without ceasing to keep “re-patenting” your marriage and its God-given design of beautiful duty and complementary unity.
Cover each other in prayer to keep the enemy’s hand from unraveling the bonded braid - God, wife, and husband.
Once again, as they say, “Marriage takes work”. So, put down your phone - all of the excuses, and get to work on the marriage “motor”. Tweak the “motor oil” when changes in mileage arise - children, needs…life. Your marriage will run smoothly, beating healthily as one heart.
For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh. - Genesis 2:24

After reading about those amazing habits for maintaining a thriving marriage – those date nights, open communication, and shared prayer – I wanted to dive a little deeper into how my husband and I really make those moments count, especially when it comes to expressing our love. It's one thing to do the habits, but it's another to infuse them with genuine affection that truly strengthens the 'husband and wife' bond, making sure that 'newlywed couple' feeling, perhaps like a kiss shared under a gazebo, never truly fades. For me, it’s not just about going on a date; it’s about making my husband feel loved during that time. We all have different ways we like to receive love, and I've found that sometimes, a few heartfelt words can make all the difference. If you're looking for ways to verbally express your appreciation, beyond just "I love you," here are a few little "love quotes" or messages I often use for my husband: "My dearest, every day spent with you feels like a blessing. You truly are my best friend and the strongest partner I could ever ask for." "Just seeing your smile brightens my entire day. Thank you for being you, for everything you do, and for making our life together so beautiful." "I still get butterflies when you look at me – just like that first moment! You're my rock, my adventure, and my favorite person to simply be with." "Remember that feeling we had, perhaps like a passionate kiss, when we first started? I still feel that spark, even more deeply now. Thank you for keeping it alive." "Our journey together is my favorite story. I’m so grateful for your strength, your kindness, and the way you always make me feel safe and cherished." These aren't just for special occasions; a quick text during the day, a note left on his pillow, or whispered during a quiet moment can powerfully reinforce your connection. It's about letting your husband know how deeply you value him, not just through actions, but through sincere words that touch his heart. Beyond words, nurturing that daily intimacy and connection as a husband and wife is paramount. Those 'date days/nights' aren't just for fun; they're opportunities to recapture the magic of a 'kissing couple' and reinforce your unique bond. We try to recreate the excitement of our early days, looking into each other's eyes, holding hands, and talking about our dreams, not just the daily grind. It’s about being present and truly seeing each other, just like we did when we were first falling in love. And open communication, while sometimes challenging, is the bedrock for deepening love. It’s not just about discussing problems, but also sharing your hopes, your fears, and your triumphs. When you truly listen to each other, without judgment, you build a fortress of trust and understanding. It allows you both to grow, individually and as a unit, ensuring your marriage doesn't just survive, but truly flourishes. Keeping Christ at the center, as mentioned, gives us a shared foundation, a purpose that transcends daily challenges, reminding us of the beautiful design of our union. This shared spiritual bond, much like two people embracing under the protection of a gazebo, strengthens our resolve and love. Ultimately, these expressions of love, whether through words or intentional actions, work hand-in-hand with the foundational habits. They transform routine into ritual, obligation into devotion, and simply maintaining a marriage into passionately building a beautiful, enduring love story. It’s a continuous investment in the most important relationship of your life, ensuring that the love between a husband and wife only deepens with time.
