A First For Me 🥰
Oh my goodness, you guys, I'm still buzzing from my last vacation! You saw my initial post about finding my first shark teeth, and seriously, it was one of the most exciting things that's ever happened to me on a beach trip. I just had to share more about the experience and hopefully inspire some of you to try your hand at this amazing beach treasure hunt! Before this trip, I'd always heard about people finding shark teeth on the beach, but I honestly thought it was one of those rare things that only super experienced collectors managed. I mean, how do you even spot something so tiny among all the shells and sand? Well, I’m here to tell you, it IS possible, and the feeling of holding those little ancient gems in your hand for the first time is absolutely magical. My discovery happened on a stretch of beach known for its shell beds, but I really wasn't expecting much. I spent a few mornings just walking along the waterline, enjoying the sound of the ocean and collecting pretty shells. On my third day, after a bit of a stormy night, the tide was super low, and I decided to try looking a bit more intently. Instead of just scanning, I got down on my hands and knees and started sifting through tiny piles of shell fragments and dark pebbles. The trick, I quickly learned, is to look for small, dark, shiny objects that have a distinct triangular or root-like shape. They often stand out against the lighter sand and shells, especially after the waves have washed away some of the lighter debris. My first find was tiny, maybe only a quarter of an inch, but it was unmistakably a perfect little black triangle with serrated edges. My hand, with its red nail polish, trembled a little as I picked it up – pure joy! After that, my eyes seemed to "tune in," and I started spotting more. It was like my brain suddenly understood what to look for. If you're dreaming of finding your own shark teeth on your next beach vacation, here are my top tips that I picked up: Go at Low Tide: This is crucial! Low tide exposes much more of the beach, including areas where teeth might have settled. Even better if it's right after a new or full moon, as tides are lower. After a Storm: Storms churn up the sand and bring new treasures to the shore. Heading out after a good storm has passed can significantly increase your chances. Look in Shell Beds: Don't just walk on the open sand. Seek out areas where shells and shell fragments accumulate. These are often where shark teeth get deposited too. Get Low and Go Slow: Resist the urge to rush. Get down close to the sand, even on your knees, and slowly scan small areas. Look for anything dark, shiny, and triangular. The "root" part of the tooth can also be a dead giveaway. Bring a Small Sifter (Optional but helpful): While I found mine by hand, a small mesh scoop or sifter can make the process easier, especially in areas with lots of small shells. Patience is Key: You might not find one immediately, and that's okay! It's part of the fun. Enjoy the search, the fresh air, and the beautiful ocean views. The reward of finding even one makes it all worthwhile. Finding these ancient relics connects you to something so much bigger than yourself, a glimpse into the past of the ocean. It's a wonderful, free souvenir that holds so much more meaning than anything you could buy in a gift shop. Plus, it's such a peaceful and meditative way to spend time outdoors. I'm already planning my next vacation with a dedicated shark teeth hunting day! Happy hunting, everyone!
