... Read moreOkay, so I recently embarked on an adventure to find Mermaids Cave in Waianae, and let me tell you, it's absolutely one of the most unique 'things to do on island' that I've discovered on Oahu! If you're looking for something off the beaten path, away from the usual tourist spots, this is it. It’s definitely not for the faint of heart, but for those who love a bit of exploration, it’s pure magic.
My journey started with a drive out to the Waianae coast, which is beautiful in itself, offering stunning ocean views away from the hustle and bustle. It's a bit of a trek from Waikiki, but totally worth it for the raw, natural beauty you encounter. Once you get to the general area, near Electric Beach (also known as Kahe Point Beach Park), you'll need to do a little searching. Parking can be a bit tricky, with limited street parking, so be prepared to walk a short distance from where you find a safe spot. Always be respectful of local residences.
The cave itself is truly a sight to behold. It's not a typical deep, dark cave, but more like a series of interconnected rock pools and open-air caverns carved out by the relentless power of the ocean. The rock formations are incredible – almost otherworldly, with various nooks and crannies to explore. When the tide is right (and this is KEY!), you can explore several chambers. I highly recommend going at low tide, as it makes navigating the slippery rocks much safer and allows you to see more of the cave's interior without being fully submerged. My personal experience was that going in the early morning at low tide meant fewer crowds and better light for those amazing photos.
The water inside is crystal clear, reflecting the light in beautiful shades of blue and green, creating a mesmerizing effect. It's an amazing spot for photography, so bring a waterproof camera or a phone with a protective case if you have one! I saw some people doing small cliff jumps into the deeper pools, but always check the depth and conditions first – safety is paramount. The rocks are incredibly slippery, so water shoes are an absolute must. Trust me, I learned that the hard way when I almost slipped a couple of times! Also, bring plenty of water and sunscreen, as there's not much shade.
To make a full day of your Waianae adventure, there are other fantastic 'things to do on island' nearby. Just a stone's throw away is Electric Beach, famous for its warm waters from the power plant outflow, which attracts an abundance of marine life, including sea turtles! It's an incredible spot for snorkeling. If you're looking for something a bit more relaxed post-cave exploration, the Ko Olina Lagoons are a short drive south, offering calm, man-made coves perfect for swimming and sunbathing, a nice contrast to the rugged coastline.
Don't forget to grab some local grindz! The Waianae area has some fantastic food trucks and local eateries where you can refuel after your adventures. From fresh poke bowls to plate lunches, it's a great way to experience authentic Hawaiian flavors and support local businesses. Exploring Mermaids Cave and the surrounding Waianae coast truly felt like uncovering a secret side of Oahu. It's a rugged, beautiful, and unforgettable experience that I'd recommend to anyone looking for an authentic island adventure away from the typical tourist itinerary.
