Reasons Why I Love Homeschooling #5
Nature. Homeschooling allows us to spend a significant amount of time in nature. I don’t necessarily mean out in the middle of the woods for hours, which we definitely do, but simply being able to embrace the ability to spend time outside whether it’s hiking, kicking around a soccer ball, fishing, riding a bike, going for a walk, sledding, skiing, enjoying lunch al fresco, building a fort, skipping rocks, reading on a blanket in the sunshine, or any of the other countless ways we enjoy fresh air. I love that my kiddos can choose to spend their time doing something they love outside before and after school responsibilities. Just the other morning, they were eager to test out their sleds on some frost in our front yard (they are on first snowfall watch as we coast into the cooler months, ready, upon waking, to gear up for hours in the snow). On most mornings, rain or shine, hot or freezing, they are dashing out the door at 8am to release some energy and explore the changes in nature. We love spending entire afternoons at a pond, lake, or river swimming and fishing, as the picture here captures perfectly. We love climbing mountains on road trips (usually by car before exploring the top) and combing for seashells at the beach. Our family finds time spent outside to be one of the most fulfilling aspects of homeschooling and frankly, of life in general. If you were to ask my kiddos, they’d no doubt confirm this by listing off no less than 10 activities they love doing outside. I believe kids are born to be in nature. I feel lucky we are able to give them the opportunity to spend that first day of snowfall outside without interruption (however light, even if it’s just frost 😉 and only to break for hot chocolate). The beauty of homeschool is, as always, the flexibility to prioritize what your family values. For us, it’s nature.
Happy homeschooling!

One of the greatest advantages of homeschooling is the freedom it allows families to prioritize nature and outdoor experiences as a central part of daily learning and life. Unlike traditional school settings constrained by strict schedules and classroom walls, homeschooling lets children engage deeply with the natural world around them. This engagement isn't limited to wilderness adventures alone—it extends to simple pleasures like reading outside on a blanket, building forts, or exploring seasonal changes without hurry. Spending meaningful time outdoors offers numerous physical and mental benefits for children. Activities like hiking, biking, fishing, or playing in the snow promote healthy exercise, stimulate curiosity, and foster problem-solving skills. These experiences also encourage family bonding and create memories that enrich childhood far beyond conventional academics. Families that homeschool often find joy in the flexibility to adapt their day according to weather and seasons. For example, children can eagerly embrace the first frost or snow with sledding and outdoor play, followed by cozy warming rituals like hot chocolate. This freedom to flow with nature's rhythms helps children develop a profound appreciation for the environment, nurturing lifelong stewardship and well-being. Moreover, immersing kids in nature supports emotional and cognitive development. Fresh air and natural settings reduce stress and improve focus, which enhances the child's ability to learn and retain knowledge when it's time to hit academic subjects. In short, incorporating nature as a foundational element in homeschooling cultivates holistic growth—physically, intellectually, and emotionally. Families who prioritize nature in their homeschooling journey create a lifestyle where education extends beyond textbooks into real-world experiences. Whether combing seashells at the beach, climbing mountains, or simply enjoying a picnic lunch al fresco, every moment spent outside enriches a child's learning and love for life. This natural approach to education aligns beautifully with homeschooling’s core benefit: the ability to tailor learning to each child’s interests and family values, making every day fulfilling and inspiring.
