Your Dark Spot Routine NEEDS This Step ☀️

Hyperpigmentation Month • Week 2 • Day 7

☀️ Sunscreen + Hyperpigmentation

The Step That Protects All Your Progress

We’ve spent all week decoding ingredients that can help target hyperpigmentation…

🍊 Vitamin C

🌿 Azelaic Acid

✨ Tranexamic Acid

🤎 Alpha Arbutin

💛 Niacinamide

But today we’re talking about the step that helps protect ALL of that progress: SUNSCREEN. ☀️🤎

UV radiation can stimulate melanocytes and contribute to increased melanin production.

Think:

☀️ UV Exposure → Melanocyte Stimulation → ↑ Melanin → Darkening/Persistent Hyperpigmentation

Sunscreen isn’t magically erasing your existing dark spots.

Instead, it helps reduce UV exposure that can continue stimulating pigmentation while your brightening routine does its job.

👀 But UV Isn’t the Whole Story

Here’s something that’s especially important when we’re talking about hyperpigmentation:

Visible light can also contribute to pigmentation, particularly with melasma and in darker skin tones.

That’s where tinted sunscreen containing iron oxides can be helpful. 🎨

☀️ Broad-Spectrum SPF → UVA + UVB protection

🎨 Iron Oxides → Additional visible-light protection

If stubborn pigmentation or melasma is your concern, a tinted sunscreen with iron oxides may be worth considering.

🧴 What Should You Look For?

For everyday hyperpigmentation management:

☀️ Broad Spectrum

☀️ SPF 30 or higher

Remember: SPF primarily measures UVB protection, which is why that broad-spectrum label matters for UVA protection too.

And no…

SPF 100 doesn’t mean you’re invincible. 😭😂

Higher SPF doesn’t replace proper application or reapplication.

✌🏾 How Much?

A practical guideline is approximately two finger lengths for the face and neck, although the exact amount can vary depending on the product, finger size and area covered.

The big lesson:

🚨 Don’t underapply your sunscreen.

Applying too little may mean you aren’t achieving the protection stated on the label.

⏰ What About Reapplication?

When you’re outdoors, especially with prolonged exposure:

Reapply about every 2 hours and after:

🏊🏽‍♀️ Swimming

💦 Heavy sweating

🧻 Towel drying

If you’re mostly indoors, reapplication depends more on your actual exposure.

☁️ “But It’s Cloudy…”

Clouds don’t mean zero UV exposure.

And UVA can pass through window glass, which means exposure can still matter if you’re spending significant time near a window or driving. 🚗☀️

🤎 Now Let’s Put Week 2 Together

🍊 Vitamin C → Antioxidant + pigment support

🌿 Azelaic Acid → Pigment + inflammation

✨ Tranexamic Acid → Pigment signaling

🤎 Alpha Arbutin → Tyrosinase inhibition

💛 Niacinamide → Melanosome transfer

☀️ Sunscreen → Helps protect your progress

That’s the part I really want you to remember:

☀️ Sunscreen isn’t competing with your brightening ingredients, it’s supporting them.

You can spend money on all the brightening serums you want, but protecting your skin from something that can continue stimulating pigmentation is part of the treatment strategy too.

🚨 BriSkinDecoded Reminder

SUNSCREEN DOESN’T FADE YOUR DARK SPOTS OVERNIGHT.

It helps protect your skin while the rest of your hyperpigmentation routine does its job.

✨ Brightening ingredients help target pigmentation.

☀️ Sunscreen helps protect your progress.
