Tomato Update - Feeding Tube
I had a scare yesterday. According to the vet, I need to feed Tomato a can and a 1/4 of the food they gave me a day. 40ml/ccs to start. I was able to do it the first night, but Tomato has been prone to crawling underneath my bed and my daughter’s bed for safety.
I wasn’t able to get to Tomato until late last night, so I could feed him. He was so far back under my bed, and I could only move so far. I cried, I begged, I sobbed, wailed, and pleaded for him to move towards me.
I wanted him to keep going, to fight, and to let me help him. Eventually somehow I was able to maneuver to where I could grab him and get him out from under my bed. I was only able to feed him half of his feeding at that time. While I normally would have seen this as a failure, it was definitely a small victory.
Recovery is hard, sometimes it looks like he doesn’t see me. Other times I wonder if the pain is too much for him. One of the more terrifying things is that hay do I do if he doesn’t make it? I still have two other cats and a child. The vet fees are extravagant, so I’m putting my all into this treatment.
I will be looking into pet insurance for my cats after this. But am I doing him a disservice? Am I being selfish for wanting to try to keep him around? I’ve never lost a pet in this manner before and it definitely scares me. So for now if death is knocking on Tomato’s door, we aren’t answering.

Caring for a sick pet can be one of the most challenging experiences for any pet owner. The process often involves learning how to administer medication, manage dietary restrictions, and most importantly, maintain your pet's comfort and emotional well-being. Many pet owners find themselves questioning if they are doing the right thing, fearing the worst, and wondering about the future of their furry friends. It's crucial to remember that pets thrive on routine and familiar surroundings. Sometimes, making adjustments such as creating a comfortable feeding area or ensuring their favorite spots are accessible can make a significant difference. In Tomato's case, it's essential to stick to the vet's feeding recommendations, monitoring weight, and recognizing signs that might indicate distress or pain. Every small victory in the feeding process, such as successfully administering food or observing your pet's willingness to engage, should be celebrated as progress. Additionally, considering pet insurance can provide peace of mind regarding potential vet fees, allowing you to focus solely on your pet's recovery. Building a support network with fellow pet owners, whether in-person or through social media platforms, can be beneficial during this emotional time. Sharing experiences and advice can help alleviate feelings of isolation and provide hope. Remember, every pet's journey is unique, and it's essential to remain patient and compassionate towards both yourself and your pet as you navigate this emotional landscape.
