LISBOA

... Read moreWhen I first planned my solo trip to Lisbon, I was dreaming of vibrant colors and historic charm, and Alfama absolutely delivered! Stepping into this ancient district, it felt like time had slowed down. The narrow, winding alleys, cobbled streets, and pastel-colored buildings immediately captivated me. I remember specifically looking for those iconic 'blue streets' I'd seen in photos, and while there isn't one single famous street named 'Blue Street,' what I found was even better – an entire neighborhood painted in hues of blue, white, and terracotta, especially through its incredible *azulejos*. These traditional Portuguese ceramic tiles, often in stunning shades of blue and white, adorn countless buildings, churches, and fountains throughout Alfama. Walking through the labyrinthine streets, you'll constantly stumble upon facades covered in intricate blue patterns. From certain angles, especially with the bright Lisbon sunlight, entire sections of a street can appear bathed in a beautiful blue glow. It's truly magical and makes every corner a potential photo opportunity. I spent hours just wandering, letting myself get wonderfully lost, and discovering these hidden artistic gems, each revealing a piece of Lisbon's soul. The sense of history is palpable; you can almost hear Fado music drifting from open windows. One of my favorite things to do was find a charming cafe with an outdoor terrace, order a fresh pastel de nata and a strong coffee, and just watch life unfold amidst these colorful surroundings. The apartment views I was lucky enough to experience in Alfama weren't just about the panoramic cityscapes; they were also about looking down onto these very streets, seeing the intricate patterns of the blue tiles, the clotheslines strung across alleys, and the terracotta rooftops stretching towards the Tagus River. It felt like living inside a painting, truly embracing that 'soft life' I was seeking, far from the hustle and bustle. The 'LIS' in Lisbon truly comes alive in these moments. For anyone else hoping to find their own 'blue street' moments in Lisbon, I highly recommend exploring Alfama without a strict itinerary. Just let your feet guide you through its historic maze. Keep an eye out for hidden courtyards, small chapels, and local eateries tucked away in unexpected corners. Don't be afraid to peek into doorways (respectfully, of course!) or climb a few extra steps. Many of the best views, both of the city and of these charming blue-tiled streets, come from the Miradouros (viewpoints) scattered throughout the district, or even from the balconies of local apartments. It’s an experience that perfectly blends history, art, and the relaxed pace of Portuguese life. Every turn offers a new perspective, and you’re bound to find your own version of Lisbon’s captivating blue charm. It’s the perfect place for a solo traveler to soak it all in.
