Financial abuse is real

Financial abuse doesn’t always leave bruises but it leaves scars. Just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it’s not real.

It can look like:

• Being made to feel guilty for needing or spending money

• Having no access to finances

• Being told you’re not contributing, even when you’re doing everything you can

• Feeling like you can’t leave because you “don’t have anything

It doesn’t always look loud or violent. Sometimes it’s subtle control disguised as concern. Manipulation wrapped in “protection.” And it leaves you questioning your worth and your independence.

If this hits close to home, just know:

you’re not crazy, you’re not selfish, and you’re definitely not alone.

Even quietly recognizing it is a strong first step.

And healing slowly, softly, and on your terms is possible.

... Read moreFinancial abuse is often misunderstood as it can be subtle and insidious, blending with manipulative behaviors under the guise of concern. Victims may experience a range of controlling behaviors, including emotional guilt over spending, restricted access to resources, and verbal denigration about financial contributions, leading to a pervasive sense of self-doubt and dependency. Many people suffering from financial abuse may not even recognize their situation as abusive due to its covert nature. Financial abuse is indeed a form of domestic violence, which is why it often flies under the radar in discussions about abuse. Resources like WWW.SEETHETRIUMPH.ORG highlight the importance of awareness and recovery for victims. Understanding that financial manipulation is a violation of autonomy and respect is critical in raising awareness about this form of abuse. Recognizing the signs of financial abuse is a crucial step towards seeking help and reclaiming one’s independence. Healing from financial abuse takes time and often requires professional support, but it's essential for individuals to believe that their experiences are valid and worthy of acknowledgment. Remember, reaching out and connecting with others who understand can be an empowering step in your healing journey.

Abuse is not okay
Abuse doesn’t discriminate. It doesn’t care if you’re a man or a woman, strong or soft-spoken, young or older. It doesn’t knock on the door and ask permission… it slowly finds its way in. Sometimes it starts with words. Little comments that don’t feel right. Jokes that cut a little too deep.
