It’s often portrayed that women of the time were just there, meant to be silent ornaments for the male gaze. In some cases this may be true, but here we talk about southern women. Typically, the woman was running the home. She oversaw and managed every aspect of the property, staff, and home. Husbands usually had the final say, but overall she was the manager. She knew every little thing going on. On top of it all, she looked her best, hosted often, oversaw the raising of the children and their education, and helped her community however she could. She was responsible for creating the culture and atmosphere of her home.
