Simple activities to help lower stress

We all have times when life feels overwhelming. As someone who has a pretty sensitive nervous system, I’ve had to learn to prioritize simple soothing strategies when stress, fear, anxiety, or simply overwhelm kicks in. When we take time to care for our stress response first, it helps increase our capacity to reason, problem solve, or address in healthy ways the thing that is causing that response in the first place!

Prioritizing soothing strategies is essential for regaining control and enhancing emotional resilience. Engaging in low-stimulation activities can have a profound impact on your mental clarity. For instance, puzzles not only promote cognitive engagement but also trigger a cortisol-lowering response. Reading acts as a healthier escape from daily stressors, allowing your mind to calm down while immersing yourself in different worlds. Baking provides a multi-sensory experience, where the act of rolling dough can promote mindfulness. Similarly, activities like hammocking or sitting in the sun can activate your parasympathetic nervous system, releasing endorphins and increasing serotonin levels. This boosts your mood and helps regulate emotions effectively. Journaling is another excellent practice that allows you to externalize thoughts and feelings. This act can enhance creativity, problem-solving skills, and emotional processing. Crafts like sewing or painting encourage a flow state that promotes focus and calms anxiety by engaging both hemispheres of the brain. Engaging in coloring or drawing can significantly calm the amygdala, which is responsible for the fear response. Ultimately, developing a personalized toolkit of stress relief activities enables you to nurture your mental health better, creating a healthier and more balanced life.
