🕰️ Origins of Tarot Cards
• 14th–15th century Europe:
Tarot cards first appeared in northern Italy around the mid-1400s. They were not originally mystical tools but playing cards used for games called tarocchi. Wealthy families commissioned beautifully hand-painted decks, such as the famous Visconti-Sforza Tarot.
• Card structure:
Early tarot decks had four suits (like regular playing cards) and an additional set of triumph cards (trumps). These trumps depicted symbolic scenes—kings, virtues, and allegorical figures—which later evolved into the Major Arcana we know today.
• 18th century (France):
Tarot’s transformation into a mystical tool began when occultists and mystics—like Antoine Court de Gébelin—believed that the symbols on the cards held ancient wisdom, supposedly from Egyptian mystery traditions.
Although this theory wasn’t historically accurate, it sparked centuries of esoteric interpretation.
• 19th century:
French occultists such as Eliphas Lévi linked Tarot to Kabbalah, alchemy, and astrology, solidifying its role as a spiritual tool for insight.
• 1909 – Rider–Waite–Smith Deck:
The most famous and widely used deck was created by Arthur Edward Waite (a mystic of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn) and illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith.
This deck introduced full imagery to every card in the Minor Arcana, making intuitive reading much easier.
