Understanding Aleyó in Lukumí Tradition

In Lukumí / Santería, an aleyó is a person who is not initiated into the religion, a “guest” to the house or outsider to the priesthood and formal rites.

Important clarification

   •   Aleyó (noun) = uninitiated person

   •   Aleyo (greeting/affirmation) = joy, blessing, well-being

Same word root, different usage depending on context and tone.

Religious meaning:

   •   An aleyó has not received kariocha/elekes/warriors/mano de orula/ hand of Ifa/guerrors(initiation)

   •   They may be curious, respectful, studying, or even practicing informally

   •   They are not crowned and do not hold priestly titles

   •   The term is descriptive, not insulting

Used in contrast with

   •   Olorisha / Santero(a): fully initiated priest

   •   Babalawo: priest of Ifá

   •   Aborisha: someone in preparation or early devotional stages
