... Read moreOkay, so after my last post about finally getting that new purple hack squat machine at my Planet Fitness and those intense 'warrior marks,' I got so many DMs asking about how to even use these leg machines! It's totally understandable. When I first started at Planet Fitness, the leg machine area felt a bit overwhelming, especially with all the different variations like the leg press machine and the *hack squat*. If you're new to the gym or just looking to incorporate more leg day exercises at Planet Fitness, let me share what I've learned. First off, don't be afraid to try! I remember feeling a mix of 'YEYYYYY' excitement and a little bit of 'OUCHHHH' pain from learning new movements. Finding Your Footing on the Leg Press Machine at Planet Fitness: The leg press machine is fantastic for targeting your quads, hamstrings, and glutes. When you sit down, make sure your back is pressed firmly against the pad. Your feet should be shoulder-width apart on the platform. A common mistake is locking out your knees at the top – never do that, it can be really bad for your joints! Control the movement, pushing through your heels, and stop just before your knees fully lock. My personal tip? Start with a lighter weight than you think you need. It’s better to have perfect form with less weight than struggle with too much and risk injury. And don't forget to adjust the safety stoppers! Conquering the Hack Squat Machine (Like Mine!): Now, for the beast itself – the *hack squat machine*! This machine, like the one that left me with some *red marks and abrasions*, is amazing for building serious leg strength. It feels different from a free-weight squat because your back is supported, allowing you to really focus on driving through your legs. When you get in, position your shoulders firmly under the pads – this is where those 'warrior marks' can come from if you're not careful! Make sure to use the safety handles to lock and unlock the machine. Descend slowly, keeping your core tight and your chest up, as if you're sitting back into a chair. Push back up through your heels, engaging those glutes. If you're getting bruising or red marks on your shoulders, you might want to try padding the shoulder rests with a small towel, or adjust your shoulder position slightly. It took me a few tries to find the sweet spot! General Tips for Leg Machines & Your Planet Fitness Gym Inside: Watch a quick demo: If you're unsure how to use a leg press machine at Planet Fitness or any other equipment, search for a quick video online or ask a staff member. Most Planet Fitness locations have friendly staff who can give you a quick rundown. Warm-up is key: Don't jump straight into heavy lifting! A few minutes on the treadmill or bike, followed by some dynamic stretches, will prepare your muscles. Listen to your body: If something feels off, stop. Pushing through sharp pain is never a good idea. My 'OUCHHHH' moments were a good reminder to check my form! Don't be intimidated: I know sometimes it feels like there are so many experienced gym rats around, but everyone starts somewhere. Focus on your workout and your progress. Explore: Your Planet Fitness gym inside likely has a variety of *leg machines*. Don't just stick to one! Try the leg extension, hamstring curl, and calf raise machines to hit your muscles from all angles. My goal for my next glute day is to really perfect my hack squat form and maybe avoid any new *shoulder abrasions*! What are your favorite Planet Fitness leg machines or tips for a great leg workout?
