Hey everyone! Following up on our incredible trip to Ski Apache in Ruidoso, I wanted to share a few more tips and insights that might help you plan your own adventure. If you're considering a visit, especially with family or if you're new to skiing, this is for you! Making the Most of Ski Apache (Especially for Beginners!) We learned so much on our first ski lesson! The slopes at Ski Apache are really welcoming, even if your son decides skiing isn't his favorite thing. For beginners, definitely invest in lessons. The instructors are fantastic and can get you comfortable quickly. Don't be shy about starting on the bunny slopes! The feeling of gliding down, even a gentle slope, is exhilarating. The scenic ski lift gondola rides up the mountain offer breathtaking views of snowy trees and the expansive landscape. You'll be glad you brought your ski goggles and winter jackets for those chilly but beautiful rides! Exploring Ruidoso Beyond the Slopes While Ski Apache is the main draw, Ruidoso itself is a charming mountain town with plenty to offer. After a long day on the ski slope, we loved exploring the village. You'll find unique shops, delicious local eateries, and a relaxed atmosphere. The drive through the winding road to get there, with pine trees towering under a clear blue sky, is an experience in itself. If you're looking for an 'angels touch' kind of vibe, you'll find it in the peaceful surroundings and the friendly locals. Don't forget to check out Grindstone Lake for some non-skiing outdoor fun like hiking or fishing, or catch a race at Ruidoso Downs Racetrack if you're visiting in the summer. Altitude Sickness: My Personal Experience & Prevention Tips As I mentioned, altitude sickness caught me by surprise. It's a real thing, and it can definitely impact your trip! My feet started swelling, and I just felt generally unwell. The doctor later confirmed it was due to low oxygen. To avoid this, here are some things I wish I knew: Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate! Drink plenty of water before and during your trip. Take it Easy on Arrival: Don't hit the most strenuous activities immediately. Give your body a day or two to adjust. Avoid Alcohol and Caffeine (initially): These can dehydrate you. Listen to Your Body: If you feel lightheaded, nauseous, or have a headache, take a break, rest, and consider descending to a lower altitude if symptoms worsen. Talk to Your Doctor: Especially if you have pre-existing conditions, ask about preventative measures or medications. Seeing my daughter in her purple and white ski jacket and knitted hat happily speeding down the slopes made me realize how important it is to be healthy to enjoy these moments fully. So, be prepared and enjoy the stunning snow-capped mountain views responsibly! Whether you're putting on your ski boots or simply enjoying the scenery, Ruidoso offers an unforgettable experience.
