just call me Lupe
Names often carry rich personal and cultural significance, and I’ve always felt a special connection to my nickname, Lupe. It’s much more than just a shortened version of Guadalupe—it represents a part of my identity that feels authentic and uniquely mine. Interestingly, my nickname wasn’t originally planned. The nurse at the hospital suggested Lupe as my mom was considering naming me Guadalupe. This simple moment has stayed with me because it reflects how names can shape perceptions and relationships from the very beginning. Choosing to go by Lupe has helped me connect with my heritage while also expressing my individuality. It’s a reminder that names aren’t just labels; they can be expressions of personality, culture, and personal history. If you’ve ever had a nickname that means more to you than your given name, you understand the comfort and identity it can provide. For me, Lupe is a hand-me-down name transformed into a personal emblem. It’s a small but meaningful way I honor my family’s traditions while embracing who I am today.
