Afraid to finish
Not ready to finish this book, because what if it’s not a happy ending? #bookwormsoflemon8 #lemon8challenge
Okay, so I'm back with an update on my reading journey – or lack thereof! You know that feeling when you're 'Currently Reading' a book so incredibly good, so utterly captivating, that you actually start to dread turning the last page? That's exactly where I am with Tananarive Due's masterful novel, *The Reformatory*. Seriously, the struggle is real! From the moment I saw The Reformatory cover – that striking, haunting blue design – I knew I was in for a gripping read. It’s definitely one of those book covers that immediately draws you in, hinting at the atmospheric horror within. Tananarive Due has this incredible ability to weave a story that's not just scary, but deeply emotional and thought-provoking. I’ve been completely immersed in the world she's created, getting to know the characters, especially young Robert. But now, as I get closer to the end, a wave of anxiety hits me. What if Robert dies? No spoilers, please, but my mind keeps racing with possibilities, and some of them are just too heartbreaking to contemplate. I'm genuinely 'scared to finish' because I'm not sure my heart can take it, or if I'm ready to say goodbye to these characters and this incredibly tense narrative. This isn't just about *The Reformatory*, though. It's a universal bookworm problem that many of us face, a topic you often see discussed in a 'struggle with finishing books' blog post. We find a story, a world, characters that resonate so deeply, and the idea of that journey ending feels like a mini-grief. Sometimes it's fear of a tragic resolution, like my worry for Robert in this book. Other times, it's simply not wanting the magic to fade, or the anticipation to end. I've heard some people cope by reading other books simultaneously, almost as a palate cleanser, or by deliberately slowing down their reading pace to savor every last word. Some even peek at the ending (I could never!), while others dive straight into discussion forums or blogs to process their feelings with fellow readers. I often wonder if the fear is worse than the actual ending itself! I've been trying to distract myself by researching more about Tananarive Due's other works, maybe to line up my next read, but it's hard to pull away from the tension The Reformatory has built. This book isn't just a story; it feels like an experience. The way the supernatural elements blend with the harsh historical setting of Jim Crow-era Florida is just phenomenal. It’s a book that stays with you, long after you’ve closed the cover, which probably adds to my reluctance to finish. It’s quickly become one of the most impactful books I’ve read this year. So, tell me, my fellow Lemon8 book lovers: How do you handle this dilemma? Do you power through, bracing for impact? Or do you prolong the inevitable, savoring every last chapter? What books have you been 'scared to finish' because you just couldn’t bear the thought of it ending, or the ending being too sad? I'd love to hear your strategies and your own experiences with books that have left you on the edge, both emotionally and literally, not wanting to turn that final page!
