... Read moreAs a parent of a child with autism, I have come to understand that behaviors like watching the same movie intro repeatedly are not just quirks but important ways for my child to cope and find comfort. This repetitive action is commonly linked to stimming, which refers to self-stimulatory behaviors that help autistic individuals manage sensory input and emotional states. For my 9-year-old son, starting his favorite movie over and over from the intro isn’t about impatience or boredom. It’s about creating a predictable environment where he feels safe and can process the world around him at his own pace. This repetition gives him a sense of control and reduces anxiety caused by unexpected changes or overwhelming sensory information. Understanding this behavior has helped me move beyond frustration to empathy and support. I now see these moments as opportunities to connect and observe what triggers his need for stimming. By providing a calm, accepting environment and gently guiding him towards additional coping mechanisms, I help him navigate daily challenges. Stimming can take many forms—hand flapping, rocking, or focusing intently on certain sounds or sights—and each autistic child may have unique preferences. Embracing these behaviors instead of suppressing them fosters positive emotional regulation and self-expression. If you are a parent, caregiver, or educator of a child on the autism spectrum, remember that patience and understanding are key. Educate yourself about autism awareness and create safe spaces where children feel seen and accepted. Sharing experiences with others in the autism community can also provide support and fresh perspectives. Through acceptance and informed care, we can appreciate the small moments—like watching a movie intro a hundred times—as meaningful parts of an autistic child’s world.

My grandson does it as well. He is almost like a DJ. keeps rewinding the same 10 second scene.
