New plant mom here 🙋‍♀️

I am so excited about my new babies! A friend recently gave me several cuttings and I am so dang excited! I had ONE real plant in my house, ONE (my Snake plant) and it has made me want more! So give me ALL the tips on propagating. #plants #propagation #plantmom #decor #homedecor

... Read moreAs a fellow plant enthusiast, I absolutely get the excitement of getting new cuttings! It’s like welcoming tiny green babies into your home. Since you’re asking for propagation tips, let me share some things I’ve learned on my own plant parent journey. It can feel a bit daunting at first, especially when you're waiting for those precious roots to appear, but with a few pointers, you'll be a propagation pro in no time! First, let's talk about general propagation. Most cuttings, whether from a Pothos, Philodendron, or even your Snake Plant if you take a leaf cutting, need a node to root. That's the little bump on the stem where a leaf or branch used to be or is growing. I always make sure my cutting has at least one or two nodes submerged in water or buried in soil. For water propagation, I use clear jars so I can watch the roots develop – it’s so satisfying! Just remember to change the water every few days to keep it fresh and prevent bacterial growth. For soil propagation, I use a well-draining potting mix and keep it consistently moist, but not soggy. A little humidity helps too, especially for tropical plants. Now, you mentioned spider plant babies without roots – that's a classic! Spider plants are super generous with their 'pups' or plantlets. To propagate them, you can either snip them off with a short stem once they're a decent size (about 2-3 inches across) or even leave them attached to the mother plant while rooting them in a separate pot of soil or a glass of water. If you're rooting them in water, make sure only the base of the pup is submerged, not the leaves, to prevent rot. Once you see a good network of roots (usually a few weeks to a month), they're ready for their own pot. I find they root quite easily, so don't worry too much! Beyond propagation, perhaps you're thinking about expanding your plant family to include specific types, like a Dracaena. I've learned a lot about keeping these beauties happy. Dracaenas, like my Corn Plant (a type of Dracaena), love bright, indirect light. Too much direct sun can scorch their leaves, but too little can make them leggy. When it comes to watering, I always let the top few inches of soil dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering is a common mistake that can lead to root rot, so I usually check the soil moisture every 7-10 days, depending on the season and humidity. If you see brown tips, it might be due to low humidity or fluoride in your tap water. Consider using filtered water or letting tap water sit overnight. Another fascinating plant is the Bromeliad. Their life cycle is truly unique! They're known for their vibrant, long-lasting 'flowers' (which are actually colorful bracts). What's cool about Bromeliads is how they absorb water and nutrients – mainly through their central cup. So, instead of just watering the soil, I make sure to keep that central 'urn' filled with fresh water. The soil should stay slightly moist, but never waterlogged. After a Bromeliad blooms, it starts to produce 'pups' or offsets around its base. The mother plant will slowly decline after flowering, but these pups are its legacy! Once they're about one-third to half the size of the mother plant, you can carefully separate them with a clean, sharp knife and pot them in their own well-draining mix. It's a bit like a plant relay race! Keeping track of watering schedules and plant needs can be tricky, especially with a growing collection. I've found plant care apps to be incredibly helpful for setting reminders and getting quick care guides for different species. They can be a lifesaver for a busy plant parent! Learning about plants is such a rewarding journey, and every new leaf and root feels like a small victory. Happy propagating!

Where’s the door in this room? I’m assuming this is the LR and the door is behind you?? If so, it’s similar to my layout and I’m curious how you positioned the chair/love seat in relation to the door.
