There's nothing quite like the thrill of discovering a hidden treasure in nature, is there? For me, my 'happy place' is definitely out there, exploring riverbeds and trails in Ohio, searching for unique crystals, interesting stones, and even old bones. If you've been wondering where to go to start your own rock hounding adventure, let me share some insights from my journeys! Ohio might not be the first place that comes to mind for rock hounding, but our rich geological history, especially around our many rivers and creeks, makes it a fantastic hunting ground. From ancient marine fossils left by prehistoric seas to beautiful flint and quartz, there's always something fascinating to uncover. And yes, sometimes you even find interesting animal bones, cleaned and bleached by nature, waiting to be appreciated! So, 'where to go'? My best advice is to focus on riverbanks and creek beds, especially after heavy rains. The water washes away lighter sediment, exposing heavier rocks and fossils. Look for areas with gravel bars or places where the water current slows down, as these are natural collection points. Always make sure you have permission if you're on private land, and check local regulations for public parks or state lands regarding collecting. Some of my most exciting finds have been along lesser-known creek beds that feed into larger rivers. Before you head out, gear up! A small trowel or shovel, sturdy gloves, a brush to clean off dirt, a bucket or canvas bag for your finds, and a field guide specific to Ohio's geology can make a huge difference. Don't forget water, snacks, and most importantly, comfortable, waterproof shoes! Patience is key; sometimes you'll find amazing pieces right away, other times it's a quiet walk. But every outing is an adventure, and you never knew what you'll stumble upon. Once you've collected your treasures, take the time to clean them gently and try to identify them. There are many online resources and local geology groups that can help. Remember to practice ethical collecting: take only what you need, leave the area better than you found it, and respect the environment. It’s all about enjoying the process and connecting with nature. Finding these natural artifacts, whether it's a shimmering quartz crystal, a water-smoothed river stone, or a beautifully preserved bone, is incredibly rewarding. It's a journey of discovery that continually fills my cup and truly makes it my happy place.
