Onion planting

2024/12/31 Edited to

... Read moreOnion planting is a rewarding endeavor that can yield delicious and versatile vegetables for your kitchen. To begin, choosing the right variety is essential. Select between yellow, red, or white onions based on your culinary needs. Prepare your soil by ensuring it's rich in nutrients and well-draining. The pH level should ideally be between 6.0 and 6.8 for optimum growth. Plant onion sets or seeds in the early spring when soil temperatures are consistently above 50°F (10°C). Ensure adequate spacing of about 4 to 6 inches apart to allow for healthy bulb formation. Water the onions consistently, but be careful not to overwater as soggy conditions can lead to rot. Regular weeding and monitoring for pests like onion flies or aphids are crucial for maintaining a healthy crop. As your onions mature, they will begin to topple over, signaling that it's time to harvest. Allow them to dry in a shaded area before storing them in a cool, dark place for long-term preservation.
