... Read moreMy recent golf outing, as you might have seen from my story, ended with a bit of a bang – and not the triumphant kind on the green! Leaving my phone in my car and immersing myself in two rounds of golf was my idea of a perfect day, a chance to truly unwind and have some fun. But coming home to the accusation of being "controlling" for simply wanting that personal time, that moment of enjoyment, really hit home and made me reflect deeply on what it truly means to be a woman enjoying activities often seen as 'men's fields'. It feels like there’s often an unwritten rulebook for women, especially when we step into spaces like golf courses or other traditionally male-dominated areas. We're expected to juggle everything – career, family, home – and often, when we carve out time for ourselves, for something purely for our enjoyment, we can sometimes face resistance, or worse, judgment. The idea of 'fun' itself seems to be policed differently for women. For me, disconnecting from my phone and immersing myself in a sport wasn't just a game; it was a mental break, a chance to reconnect with myself and simply exist without constant demands. We often hear about the importance of self-care, but when that self-care involves stepping out of traditional roles, it can become a battle. So, what do we do when our pursuit of passion or simply 'having fun' is met with resistance or accusations like being 'controlling'? It's a complex dance. I've learned that open communication is key, even when it's hard. Setting boundaries, reiterating the importance of personal space and hobbies, and sometimes, simply standing firm in your right to enjoy your life are crucial. It's about challenging the narrative that a woman’s time for herself is somehow less valid or, as I experienced, an act of defiance. Finding a community, whether online or in person, where women in these fields can share experiences is invaluable. Knowing you're not alone in facing these subtle (or not-so-subtle) challenges can be incredibly empowering. It helps us feel less isolated when we hear similar stories, like the one I shared about my own experience on the golf course. It’s about redefining what 'women's fun' looks like and unapologetically claiming our space in any field we choose, be it golf, engineering, or anything else. It's a journey, and sometimes it's messy, but embracing our right to pursue our passions, no matter how 'unconventional' they might seem to others, is a vital part of being a strong, independent woman today. Let's keep challenging those unspoken rules and making space for ourselves.
