... Read moreMaking homemade bagels is a rewarding experience, especially during the cozy fall season when warm, freshly baked goods are comforting and enjoyable. This recipe uses a boil bath enriched with honey or syrup, which is a traditional method to give bagels their characteristic chewy crust and shiny surface. The boiling step, which lasts about one minute per side, helps set the crust before baking, resulting in that perfect bagel texture. One tip for an enhanced flavor is using barley malt syrup instead of sugar in the dough, as it adds a subtle richness and helps achieve an authentic bagel taste. If barley malt syrup is unavailable, honey or regular sugar works well, but malt syrup is a favorite among bakers for its depth of flavor. When shaping your bagels, ensuring the holes are large enough allows even baking and creates the classic bagel look. After the final rise, brushing with an egg wash mixed with water not only gives a golden finish but also acts as an adhesive for toppings like sesame seeds, garlic, or onion flakes. Storing homemade bagels properly is key to maintaining freshness. Placing cooled bagels in an airtight bag helps keep them soft for up to four days, but for longer storage, freezing is recommended. To reheat frozen bagels, slice them first and toast directly for a fresh-out-of-the-oven experience. Additionally, experimenting with toppings or mixing in flavors like cinnamon raisin or everything spice before boiling can diversify your bagel options. Homemade bagels allow you to control ingredients, avoiding preservatives and artificial additives often found in store-bought varieties, making them a healthier and more satisfying choice. Whether enjoyed plain with butter or as a base for sandwiches, these homemade bagels are a charming fall baking project that fills your kitchen with delightful smells and your table with warm, fresh bread. Embrace this fall baking tradition and enjoy the joy of fresh bagels all season long.
