What’s your trick for avoiding fall blues? 🥲🍁
The past few Fall’s I noticed a pattern… I’d start staying in more, and just feel… off.
This year I wanted to try catching it early instead of waiting for it to hit full force.
☀️ I open my blinds first thing or step outside for a few minutes… even if it’s cold. It actually ticks me off but I do it.
🔴 I’ve been using a small red light while I get ready or wind down… it feels calming and helps me stay more alert during the day.
🕯️ I swapped harsh lighting for warm lamps, candles, and blankets… my evenings feel instantly cozier. THIS HELPS A LOT ACTUALLY IDK WHY
🎧 Calm playlists in the background while I cook or work make long afternoons feel less heavy. (I listen to one podcast on repeat ☝️)
🍲 Warm, comforting meals like soups, roasted veggies, or simple skillet dinners… they just make me feel like an old lady. 😛
🚶♀️ Light movement, like going to the gym or some stretching while watching a show, helps me feel less sluggish.
💌 Planning tiny weekend things I look forward to… baking, movie nights, game nights… it makes the days feel lighter.
Does anyone else have little things that make the season easier to get through? 🍂

Seasonal depression, also known as seasonal affective disorder (SAD), can significantly affect mood and energy levels during the colder, darker months. One highly effective approach is to expose yourself to natural sunlight soon after waking up, as it helps reset your body clock and boosts serotonin — the brain's 'feel-good' hormone. Even on cloudy days, a short 5-10 minute walk or simply opening the blinds can make a big difference. In addition to natural light, the use of specialized lighting such as small red lights can help maintain alertness and calmness throughout the day. Red light therapy is known to promote relaxation and can support your circadian rhythm, enhancing your alertness without causing overstimulation. Creating a cozy atmosphere by swapping harsh overhead lights for warm lamps, candles, and blankets not only improves your physical environment but also has an emotional effect, making evenings feel more inviting and reducing feelings of gloom. Music and podcasts serve as powerful mood enhancers as well. Playing calm playlists while cooking or working fills long afternoons with comfort and distraction from seasonal lethargy. Incorporating warm, nutritious meals like soups, roasted vegetables, and balanced comfort foods contributes to stable mood and energy. Choosing ingredients that provide sustained nourishment rather than heavy junk food can prevent mood slumps. Maintaining light physical activity like stretching, gym visits, or slow workouts can combat sluggishness and promote the production of endorphins that uplift mood. Lastly, planning small but enjoyable weekend activities, such as baking, movie nights, or game nights, helps create positive anticipation and breaks the monotony of shorter days. The key is embracing the season by adjusting your habits to nurture mental wellbeing, instead of trying to force summer energy during fall and winter. Finding peace in quiet moments, slowing down your routine, and leaning into comforting rituals can make a meaningful difference when fighting seasonal depression.
