Posing in photos has always been something that I have struggled with. I’ve learned these poses over time to look less awkward/more comfortable in my photos. What are you go to poses???
... Read moreOkay, so we all know the struggle of getting a great photo, right? But what about those tricky 'back pose ideas' that look so effortless on Instagram? For the longest time, I felt so awkward trying to capture my back or a cool outfit detail from behind without looking stiff. But through a lot of trial and error (and maybe a few too many blurry photos!), I’ve found some super easy tips for beginners that have totally transformed my travel photos.
First up, let's talk about the classic 'Over-the-Shoulder' glance. The OCR mentioned 'OVER THe SHOULDER with a cheesy smile,' and while we want to avoid the cheesy part, this pose is a winner! Instead of a full grin, try a more thoughtful or slightly playful expression. The key here is subtlety. Turn your body slightly away from the camera, then gently turn your head back towards it. Imagine you’re just about to say something or caught sight of something interesting. This creates a natural curve in your spine and often highlights your profile beautifully. Make sure your shoulders are relaxed – no shrugging! It instantly adds a touch of mystery and elegance, perfect for showcasing a scenic background like the Hollywood sign, as one of my OCR images suggested.
Another fantastic option, especially when you have a fence or railing, is the 'Arms Back/Lean' pose. This one, as my OCR notes, really works wonders. Instead of just standing rigidly, lean back against whatever is available – a wall, a railing, even a tree. The act of leaning naturally pushes your shoulders back and opens up your chest, creating a much more flattering posture. You can place your hands behind you, either holding onto the railing or just casually clasping them. This pose is brilliant for showing off the back detailing of an outfit or simply creating a relaxed, contemplative vibe while you soak in a stunning view, like a beautiful coastline. It instantly makes you look more comfortable in your skin.
Then there's the 'walking away and glancing back' shot. This isn't just about showing off your back; it's about adding dynamism. Start walking away from the camera, then as you take a step, gently turn your head and upper body back slightly. It creates a sense of movement and curiosity. You can look directly at the camera with a soft smile, or gaze off into the distance as if something caught your eye. This is especially effective in open landscapes or bustling city streets, giving the photo a narrative feel.
For a confident, almost editorial back pose, try a subtle 'Hands on Hips' twist. While often done facing forward, from behind, placing your hands gently on your hips (or even just one hand) can define your waist and give you a powerful silhouette. Just make sure your elbows aren't sticking out too much – keep it natural and relaxed. A slight turn of your body can also add dimension, preventing you from looking too flat against the background.
Finally, for those breathtaking travel moments, the simple 'Embrace the View' pose where you stand with your back to the camera, looking out at the scenery, is timeless. This pose isn't about you, it's about the moment and the place. However, to make it even better, consider one (or both) arms up, as the OCR suggested, as if you're truly soaking it all in or celebrating the view. This adds emotion and scale. Or, if you prefer, a simple, relaxed stance with hands casually by your sides or lightly clasped behind your back. This pose is perfect for showcasing the grandeur of places like the Sydney Opera House or a vast ocean vista.
Remember, the goal with any pose, especially back poses, is to look natural and comfortable. Don’t be afraid to experiment with slight turns, tilts of the head, and hand placements. Practice in front of a mirror or have a friend snap a few candid shots. The more you try, the more comfortable you’ll feel, and the more stunning your back pose photos will become!
