Many cases arise when users shower, swim, or wash their face without removing contacts. This parasite attacks the cornea and can cause severe pain, vision loss, and in worst cases, blindness. Proper contact lens hygiene is essential to avoiding this dangerous infection. Always remove your lenses before any water exposure, whether showering or swimming, and use only sterile solutions for cleaning and storage. Never use tap water or homemade solutions on lenses as they may contain harmful microorganisms. Symptoms to watch for include redness, blurred vision, extreme light sensitivity, and persistent eye pain. Early diagnosis and targeted treatment are critical, though sometimes Acanthamoeba keratitis can be initially misdiagnosed, as it mimics other infections. Treatment involves aggressive antifungal or anti-amoebic eye drops and sometimes oral medications, which can last months. In advanced cases, corneal transplants may be necessary to restore vision. The journey can be emotionally and physically challenging, with intense discomfort and lifestyle changes.
