Navigating your spiritual life during your period can sometimes feel a bit confusing, especially when you want to stay connected to Allah. I remember feeling lost at times, wondering what I could and couldn't do. But alhamdulillah, Islam provides such beautiful guidance that allows us to maintain our spiritual connection throughout our cycles. Many sisters look for 'hadees about periods' to understand the rulings. While formal prayer (Salat) and fasting (Sawm) are temporarily paused, and touching the Mus'haf (physical Quran) is generally avoided without a barrier, our connection to Allah never stops. Instead, it’s a time to explore other profound ways of worship and closeness. One of the most powerful things we can do is Dhikr – remembering Allah through His names and glorifying Him. Whether it's Subhanallah, Alhamdulillah, La ilaha illallah, or Allahu Akbar, these words are always permissible and fill our hearts with peace. I love using prayer beads or just my fingers to keep track. Making Dua (supplication) is another beautiful act that is always open to us. Pour your heart out to Allah, ask for forgiveness, for guidance, for your needs, and for your loved ones. There’s immense power in dua, and it’s a direct conversation with our Creator. While reading the physical Quran might be restricted, listening to the Quran is highly recommended and deeply beneficial. There are so many amazing reciters available on apps and websites. I often put on a surah while doing chores or just relaxing. Similarly, reading Quran from a device like your phone or tablet is generally considered permissible, as it's not the physical Mus'haf. This has been a game-changer for me in continuing my daily recitation. This is also an excellent time for seeking Islamic knowledge. Dive into Islamic books, listen to lectures from scholars, or tune into enriching podcasts. Learning about our deen strengthens our faith and understanding. Taking Islamic notes from what you learn can also be a rewarding activity. Giving to charity (Sadaqah) is always a means of earning immense rewards. Even a small act of giving, whether it’s money, time, or a kind word, counts. Visiting the sick and generally being kind and helpful to others are also highly praised acts of worship that are fully permissible. Remember, our periods are a natural part of a woman's life, and Allah, in His infinite wisdom and mercy, has made provisions for us. It’s not a time of impurity in a moral sense, but a time of specific rulings for ease. Embrace this time as an opportunity to deepen your spiritual connection in different ways, focusing on acts that nourish your soul and bring you closer to Him. This guide is a wonderful start to exploring these beautiful practices.
