Freedom vs Privilege 🏳️‍🌈✊🏽🇵🇷🖤🫶🏼

I used to think freedom was just... freedom. Simple, right? But then I encountered this powerful idea that truly shifted my perspective: 'If you say you love freedom but that doesn't include everyone, then you love privilege, not freedom. They're different.' This statement really stopped me in my tracks and forced me to re-evaluate so much of what I thought I understood about our society. For too long, many of us have conflated the two concepts, often unknowingly. We talk about freedom as an inherent right, something universal. And it should be! But the reality is, for countless individuals and communities, that "freedom" isn't experienced in the same way. It's often contingent on factors like race, gender, sexual orientation, ability, or socioeconomic status. When some people have advantages that allow them to move through the world with fewer obstacles, while others face systemic barriers, that's not true freedom across the board. That's privilege at play. True freedom, as I’ve come to understand it, is a state where all individuals can genuinely thrive without arbitrary restrictions or disadvantages imposed by society. It’s about having the space to be yourself, to pursue your dreams, and to live authentically, without fear of judgment, discrimination, or harm. Privilege, on the other hand, is an unearned benefit or advantage that a person receives by virtue of their membership in a particular social group. It often remains invisible to those who possess it, making it harder to recognize its impact. For example, the freedom to love whoever you choose is a fundamental human right. But if that freedom is met with legal discrimination, social ostracization, or even violence for certain groups, while others can marry and express affection openly without a second thought, then one group is experiencing a privilege that the other is denied. This isn't about blaming anyone for their privilege, but about acknowledging its existence and the disparity it creates. Embracing this distinction requires a certain vulnerability, a willingness to look critically at our own experiences and the experiences of others. It means asking ourselves, 'Is my freedom truly universal, or is it partly built on advantages that aren't extended to everyone?' This introspective journey can be uncomfortable, but it’s essential for fostering a more just and inclusive society. When we understand that freedom without inclusiveness isn't freedom at all, it changes how we advocate for change. It shifts our focus from just protecting individual liberties to actively dismantling systems that create and maintain privilege at the expense of others’ liberation. It calls on us to champion policies and attitudes that ensure everyone has an equal opportunity to experience genuine freedom. Ultimately, working towards a world where 'all are equal' isn't just a slogan, but a lived reality, means recognizing the difference between these two powerful concepts and striving for a world where freedom is truly for everyone, without exception.
