The life of a dollar tree employee
I’ve been at Dollar Tree now for 8 months, and OMG! I thought the customers shopping at Walmart during Black Friday were feral, but baby they don’t have nothing on Dollar Tree shoppers.
Some things I’ve seen:
1: Trying to yank the door open, knowing the store is closed.
2. Buying 20 of the same thing, and while at the register will go back and grab more. It’s ok to share.
3. The parking lot not having any empty spaces left before opening, and everyone wants balloons, but getting mad if they have to wait.
4. Yes, employees will set stuff aside for ourselves, otherwise we will not be able to get it. Example: hand sanitizers.
5. Customers that will stalk certain employees because they think they will get more products from them.

Working at Dollar Tree offers a glimpse into the quirky world of discount retail. Employees often find themselves navigating a whirlwind of customer behaviors, from the eager shoppers waiting to be let in at opening to the ones who appear to buy in bulk but forget their initial haul at the register. Common occurrences include customers attempting to storm the locked doors before the store opens, a surge of shoppers when stock hits the shelves, and the camaraderie among staff as they set aside must-have items for themselves, knowing that the demand can quickly outstrip supply. The unique dynamics of Dollar Tree customers—who may be more intense than those at larger retailers—often lead to memorable encounters. Bargain hunters may be found haggling over the last item on the shelf or complaining about long lines while anxiously awaiting the latest discounts. This retail landscape requires employees to remain calm, provide exceptional service, and maintain their sense of humor. Moreover, understanding customer behavior is part of the job. The rush to grab items can create a chaotic atmosphere, resulting in customers bonding over shared interests, and it’s not uncommon for employees to become the target of requests for hard-to-find products or latest deals. Each shift can feel like an adventure, highlighting the unpredictability and excitement of retail life. With every day, employees gather funny stories and valuable insights about customer psychology, making their experiences at Dollar Tree not just about retail but also about human interactions.
