My 'What I Eat in a Day' post gave you a peek into how I fuel my busy life as a Starbucks barista who loves hitting the gym. But let's dive a bit deeper into how I make those choices, especially with intuitive eating in mind, and how you can too! Being a barista means unpredictable hours and sometimes limited access to food, so intuitive eating becomes even more essential for staying energized and feeling good. Intuitive eating isn't about strict rules; it's about listening to your body's hunger and fullness cues. For us baristas, this means planning ahead while also being flexible. On a typical 7am-3:30pm shift, my body needs consistent fuel. Instead of counting calories, I focus on balanced meals and snacks that provide sustained energy. For example, my morning banana protein matcha isn't just tasty; it's packed with protein to keep me full until my next break. I make sure to add hella scoops of protein (a barista-only modification, of course!) to keep me going. During my first ten and thirty minute breaks, I prioritize nutrient-dense snacks. An oatmeal with cinnamon and honey is a warm, comforting choice that provides complex carbs. And for that afternoon pick-me-up, my iced doppio stretto espresso with two pumps of sugar cookie, splash of oatmilk and cinnamon isn't just a treat; it's a mindful choice that satisfies my craving without overdoing it. I also always have a cheese stick or some Emergen-C vitamin C water handy for a quick boost. These aren't random choices; they're what my body tells me it needs to push through the rest of the shift and prepare for the gym. One of the biggest advantages we have as baristas is the ability to customize. Beyond adding protein to drinks, think about how you can modify your usual orders. Swapping classic syrup for a pump of brown sugar or choosing oatmilk and nonfat options can make a difference. And when it comes to food, don't be afraid to get creative! My spinach feta wrap hack, where I take out the weird egg white part and add a crushed hard-boiled egg from a snack box with Truff sauce, is a perfect example of making a quick meal truly satisfying and packed with extra protein. These are barista only modification and requires 2 seperate markouts, but totally worth it for a nutritious and delicious post-shift meal. For busy baristas, meal prepping some components can be a game-changer. Hard-boiled eggs, chopped veggies, or even pre-portioned nuts can make intuitive eating easier when you're short on time. Remember, it's about making peace with food and honoring your hunger, even when life gets hectic. You've got this!
